Evening Mini Adventure – The Cobbler

July 10, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Hi,

I took a walk up this at the weekend and it reminded me that I’ve been meaning to do it on the bike.

The plan is to park in Arrochar and ride / push / hike up the path towards The Cobbler & Ben Narnain before turning round and riding back down. How far we get will depend on the group and the available day light. I’m not planning on going to the top as it gets unridable (by mortals) after about 600m elevation.

The descent should be excellent on the bike, with half of it being technical and rocky and the other half an easier walking track through the forest. A good level of fitness and abililty on the bike will be required to get the most out of this. As well as the normal stuff listed here (http://www.gmbc.org.uk/what-to-bring/) I’d recommend bringing any knee / elbow pads etc that you have and also some sort of light. The plan is to come down in the daylight but we’ll be cutting it fine so better to be prepared.

Meet at the large car park opposite the petrol station / snack shop in Arrochar. We need to be ready to ride at 7pm due to daylight consideration, so please keep this in mind. Oh and bring midge repellant.

Any questions please ask.

Tom

  1. After the excitement of the weekend I’m definitely up for this, weather looks decent too.

Happy to car share / chip in for petrol if anyone will have me!?!

  2. Should be good for this one Tom.

Gary – happy to pick you up en route again if that works?

  3. Nick this is turning into a bit of a bromance!

Sounds good, just let me know where and when…

You guys got any suggestions for knee elbow pads, thinking I might invest in one or both?

  4. Add me to the list…but I may go there by train a bit earlier than you…and start adventure at 6pm…
Do you think that Bein Ime is rideable down (I checked photos of summit and it looks like it’s not so rocky as Devil’s Staircase)..after initial climb to 1011m ?? 😀

  5. Not sure to be honest, it looked like a fairly uninviting steep boulder / boggy hillside from where I was looking. The gradient is fairly mad – 400m in just over 1km. The Devil’s Staircase is about 300m in 2 or 3km.

If you’re going up earlier there is a popular 2-3hr long loop that starts from Arrochar. It’s scenic and ends in a nice descent that’s not too severe. Start from Succoth and climb up the fire road to Corriegrogain, cross the river and descend the footpath down Glen Loin back to Arrochar.

    • I think I did it already but in a opposite direction 🙂

I’ve also checked the profile using Google Earth. It is 330m in 1.5km so 22% gradient…

  6. Donald and I rode Ime and Narnain in February last year in the snow and ice. Ime is meant to be a bit boggy. The Cobbler is ace. Not sure how rideable the very top is as it was icy the previous time I was up there.

  7. Quite fancy this one. There’s a bit of a scrabble near the top of the Cobbler so not ideal for taking a bike all the way as Tom says. Ben Ime was quite boggy near the bottom last time I walked it (a few years back in summer)…

  8. See you there. I can offer a lift too
