Mountain Bike Orienteering “Glasgow Grit” 2017

Come join us on Sunday 21st May 2017 for a bit of mountain bike orienteering in and around Mugdock Country Park and surrounding areas!

Following on from the success of the 2016 event, Glasgow Mountain Bike Club are hosting round 3 of the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering Summer 2017 Series http://www.smbo.org.uk/mugdock-2017/, and promises to be a really fun day out.

Last year we hosted around 45 riders, where the age range spanned 50 years and everyone came back with a smile on their face so we will be aiming for more of the same. The course takes in woodland, moors and even a castle.  A mix of walkers’ paths, fire roads, some fun technical trails and hills mean the event is suitable for all abilities whether you just want to have fun or are looking for more of a challenge.

The event will be based at GMBC HQ at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club, with ample parking and toilet/changing facilities.  Registration will be open from 9am, and results and prize-winners announced from 2:30pm.  Using the marked-up maps provided, you start at the sports club and try and find as many checkpoints as you can in three hours.  There’s no defined route, and checkpoints vary in distance, location and points!  Tea, coffee, soup and cake will be available, and results and prize-winners will be announced at the sports club afterwards.

The event is open to adults and children over the age of 15 (or over the age of 12 as part of a “generations” team). You can enter as a solo or a pair; we’ll give you a map showing the checkpoints and a dibber to check in at each checkpoint.  We have aimed to make the course fun for all, from first timers to experienced mountain bikers with lots of easily reachable checkpoints, along with some further afield for those looking for a challenge.

All entrants must be a full or day-rider member of the BMBO, day rider membership is £1. All the details at: http://www.bmbo.org.uk/membership-information/.

Prices to enter the event are as follows:

  • Solo: £15
  • Pairs: £25
  • Youth: £5
  • Generation Pair (adult/youth): £20
  • Enter before 14/5/2017 and receive a 10% discount.
  • Adult entries on the day incur an additional £5, as set by BMBO.

We want to see as many of you enjoying the event as possible, this is a great opportunity to field a team of GMBC jersey-wearers, and highlight and promote the Club on its 30th Anniversary year!  If you would prefer to help out we will need a couple of volunteers to help out on the day. Tasks include setting out & retrieving checkpoints & signage, directing people to registration and start points, a small amount of car park attendance (until event starts), course “marshalling” (marshalling is not official or static but it would be good to have a few folks to ride around the course area during the event to keep an eye out for any problems).

If you have any questions about the event or if you can volunteer then please post on the GMBC Facebook page or website, email info@gmbc.org.uk or speak to Angus, Will, Gary or Andrew.
