Glen Kinglass/Etive Ride

July 8, 2012 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

The plan is to join Gerry & Grant over Rannoch Moor during their GGW/WHW epic ride before turning off at Victoria Bridge and heading down Glen Kinglass.  At the end of the Glen Kinglass we’ll turn back up Glen Etive and head back to Kingshouse.

Distance estimated at 66km, (6-8hours inc stops),  terrain is a mix of fireroad, singletrack and B road.  The lochside track in Glen Etive is rocky and potentially boggy in places I believe.  It’s a big day out with no facilities en route and can be exposed if the weather turns – so pack plenty of food/appropriate clothing.

I’ll make a call closer to the day on the weather but it’s a great chance to offer Gerry & Grant some moral support and take in a few trails that might be new to some folks (me included!).  If anyone’s ridden this one before and has any route info/advice please let me know.

The start time will be confirmed a bit closer to the day as it’s dependent on what time Gerry & Grant arrive at Kingshouse after starting from Kinlochleven.

Here’s the details of the GGW/WHW epic we’ll be tagging along with for a short distance.

  1. I’m up for this, does anyone ant to share a lift up? I can take 3 + loads of a bikes in the van.

  2. OK. The chat from last night was that we would have more options if we started at Bridge of Orchy. We could do an out & back along Glen Kinglass or the Glen Kinglass/Glen Etive/Kingshouse/Bridge of Orchy loop. Depends on the weather and those present – happy to be flexible. Tom pointed out there’s a few river crossings we’d need to be aware of – could be in spate.

Start time? Arriving Bridge of Orchy 930am – wheels turning by 10am?

It’s weather dependent though so we can make a call on Saturday.

  3. I’ll be there too!

Driving up to KLL on Saturday morning to meet Gerry and Grant later on, so planning to bike around there on the Saturday. Staying in the Blackwater Hostel overnight. There’s room in the car for 1 + bike.

  4. Weather forecast look vaguely promising for Sunday:

    MWIS Forecast West Highlands

  5. Lift wise I reckon we’ll need to be on the road at 8. I’m leaving from Kelvin bridge, let me know if you want to meet at mine or I can pick you up if you live roughly on route (07709 306 170).

  6. Hi Tom
yes, I would be interested if the is a lift going and the weather is ok…………
    ta Chris
PS could meet you along Gt Western Road?

  7. Hi there. Plans for tomorrow then. MWIS forecast for West Highlands says: breezy, drizzle, scattered showers, cloud base lifting (above 1100m), 7-9DegC at 900m.

Lifts: I have space for x1 (either Robin or Chris?) not sure we’ll all fit in Tom’s van.
Route? Happy to play it by ear based on weather, those present. Out & back or a loop.
I’m packing extra socks – there’s at least 1 river crossing. I’ll have OS maps for the area.
I should be around later tonight if anyone wants to chat over the details.

  8. Was a great route – even with the boggy section in the middle that seems to be part of every route from ‘that’ book.

Grant and Gerry reached Milngavie before us!
