Ochil Hills Ride

Old Skool mtb ride in the hills. Will try not to get lost down the glen of sorrows this time but make sure you bring extra clothes and food just in case we do. Think Pete and Graham had some good suggestions
Start point: Behind Tillycoultry Golf Club
Sounds good and will certainly be looking to come along. Will need to consult my social secretary first though before committing.
Hi Elizabeth – thanks for posting this one up. Yes, let’s not get lost by the Hill of Despair and the Bog Of Sadness or wherever it was. Some details of the route I had in mind:
35km, a couple of steep climbs, mainly open moorland and exposed on the tops of the Ochils (pack wind/waterproof jacket) and some big, wide open views over the Forth valley. Potentially a bit boggy in places. One route down is a fireroad the other is the one we took last time – twisty, narrow piece of singletrack. The singletrack return will shorten the route a bit. Heard a rumour of local trails near Dollar that might be worth looking for too.
If anyone with previous experience of riding up there has any other suggestions (Pete?) then give me a shout and I’ll see if it works into the route without making it uber-epic.

I’ll ask J about routes too- he spent many hours riding/escaping from Falkirk as a kid, and over into Glen Devon. I’ll get him to mark up my map with some options.

In order to get a warm-up in before the climb out of Dollar and finish on a high with a descent back to the cars I’ve decided to change the start/finish point for tomorrow’s ride. Sorry for the short notice.
The new start point is in Tillycoultry, just as you enter the town from the west, beside the Golf Course. As you drive in on the A91 from Alva there is carpet & furniture shop on the left, it’s a low commercial unit, turn left at this point onto a short street called Golf View. It leads to a wide gravel area beside Tillcoultry Golf Course. Grid ref: NS 913 970. Probably best park in the gravel area, not in the golf club car park itself.
There’s also an optional extension to the ride of approx 13km with a couple of climbs/descents in it that I can describe in more detail tomorrow if there was an appetite for it.
Remember: pack food, water, spares and clothing for a riding in exposed hills.
