Arran

Despite predictions of high winds and snow a few of us headed over to Arran today. Obviously no one had told the menagerie of roadies, golfers, drinkers and old-ladies-seeking-tea-shops as the ferry was as busy as ever. We had decided to try and ride the loop up Goat Fell, which as the freezing level was around 300m seemed ambitious. After a short spin on the road to Corrie, a steep section of tarmac gave way to top quality hike-a-bike. It was a steep but interesting  walk up, with great views over the sea and a mountain burn tumbling down rock slabs beside the path. We found snow around 500m, but it was fresh and grippy. The further we ascended the wind increased and by the time we reached our destination it was a bit of a blizzard.

After a brief stop it was time to take on the descent. The descent is steep and rocky, with drainage ditches at the best of times. A few inches of snow upped the challenge somewhat and I was quickly regretting leaving the pads at home after a slow but painful tumble. As we descended past the snow line the going got slightly easier and Chris and Luke led the way down the rocky path. Graham was also getting some benefit from the hefty bike he lugged up the hill, and I had a further chance to rue the lack of pads as a sticky out rock bashed my shin.

After a quick lunch in Brodick we decided to do the Clauchlands Ridge as well. The rain / sleet had really set but we were still buzzing from the Goat Fell experience. The path to the Clauchland Ridge, which sits just to the South of Brodick, is steep and technical but a great way to stay warm. The descent from the ridge is first rate, and although only a few miles from Goat Fell couldn’t be more different, having a more “organic” feel. It was wet in places, but in a fun slidey sort of way and a big contrast to the rocks on Goat Fell.

After a quick spin back to Brodick there was even time for a quick beer, before almost missing the ferry. It was another top day out on Arran, with high quality riding and near empty trails. Thanks to Graham, Chris and Luke for making it out.
