Appin Forests & Singletrack Ride (Glen Duror and Gleann an Fhiodh)

March 1, 2014 @ 10:30 am - 3:00 pm

Summary

A loop around Appin taking in the coast line, forests and remote glens. The idea is for a fairly relaxed ride and hopefully a chance for some people to get out and get a taste of some excellent Scottish “wild riding”.

The Route

This ride is an approximately 25km loop starting from Ballachulish. Plan is to follow the coastal cyclepath around to Kentallen. This will either be a chance to admire the amazing views and rocky coastline or grimace into a headwind for 10km. The route will then head up through Glen Duror and Gleann an Fhiodh before returning to Ballachulish. I’d expect it to take 3-5hrs depending on the group and amount of time exploring some of the woodland singletrack.

The route has a wide variety of trails – from cycle paths, forest roads, woodland singletrack and rocky open highland trails. The most technical section is the final few km back to Ballachulish. This is quite rocky but not very steep, so would make a good introduction to natural highland riding.

The Sensible Stuff

Although the route isn’t too long, it is remote in places so spare warm clothing, food, spares, inner tubes etc. are a must. The ride will have some technical sections that require skill to negotiate smoothly. However, if necessary the few tricky bits could be walked or avoided.

If you’re unsure if this is the ride for you just ask for more information.

Logistics

Meet at the tourist information centre in Ballachulish ready to ride at 11am. There is a decent cafe in the tourist info centre by the way.

So, who is in for this ride? Sounds good, and new area to me. We are thinking this, or an overnighter up north to check out glenlivit.

  2. Weather forecast actually looks pretty good for the west coast on Saturday. I’ll post up a reminder see if anyone else is up for it.

  3. I’m in too. See you at the info centre. The Big Debate – did Tom calculate for ‘faff’ time? 😉

  4. Nice one, glad you guys are up for it. There will be no faff time Barry. I will be holding a track stand outside Ballachulish Tourist Info office at 1059 and will sprint off at 1100 hours.

More seriously, I’m not planning on it being a pretty relaxed ride I’ve not been able to ride that much recently. There’s no cafe half way round but there is a bothy which could make a decent lunch stop. Would be good to set off at 11 just so we get back at a decent time.

  5. I’m hoping I’ll be able to attend on Saturday.

Anyone looking to car share, I’m in the Scotstoun area?

  6. I am in!! Sam are you thinking on staying up overnight on Friday or Saturday? I’d be up for a wkd of mtb! Sounds a best ride Tom 🙂

      Hi Dawn,
We were thinking about a night away up north, but have now decided to do this ride on saturday, and have booked a night in the Clachaig instead (never actually stayed there, and not as tough as Tom to stay at the Red Squirrel!)… Is Matt up for this too? Sam

  7. Sorry guys I jumped the gun! Forgot I had tickets for the Brew Dog Ale event on Saturday afternoon in the West End.

Need to give this one a miss.

  8. I’ll be coming on this one Tom. Weather forecast is good and looks like a great route. Look forward to seeing you all. Nigel

  9. I’m either after a lift or can offer up to 3 places?
Need to know by 8pm tonight though either way.
    Based in West End/byres road.

Sorry James, cant help as coming from Stirling…you could try Barry or Dawn as they both stay in west end. Contact numbers on the members pages assuming they have agreed to them being public.

  11. Free again this Saturday so see you in ballachulich at 10.30

  12. Morning all. Don’t feel up to the ride this morning, but hope you all have a good one. See you soon – cheers – Nigel
