Arrochar Alps – Coire Grogain
February 22, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
As an alternative to the excellent Pitlochry ride (as I can’t be out too long on Saturday) here’s a classic mountain bike route that should be beginner friendly for the vast majority of it’s 20km loop.
It starts from the car park at the head of Loch Long in Arrochar and heads up into the hills on fireroad. There’s a short river crossing at one point and some great singletrack to descend back to the car park. The singletrack return would be mainly rideable for beginners, from memory there are a couple of bits that are a little steeper and rockier but generally it’s fine.
Usual stuff: take food & drink, pack spares, wear clothing for being outdoors on the bike and no helmet no ride. Current forecast is for showers.
Post up or email me if you’re interested.
I think you’ve read my mind Graham! I was just about to cancel the Pitlochry ride and suggest this as an alternative. I think the conditions will be pretty rank for that ride from Pitlochry. I’m not so much worried about the rain as the slushy snow on the higher bits. So I’ll see you in Arrochar on Saturday morning.
The credit for the idea goes to Dawn. Neither of us will be riding fast on this ride.
Given the impending weather a shorter ride might be an idea!
I have three spaces in my car if anyone wants in? Leaving from Byres road.
Looks like I’ve got a free day tomorrow so I’ll see you in the car park at 10am
I will head up too. C u at the car park
Beware, take your wellies!. I went up to Arrochar yesterday, went as far up the cobbler as I could before the snow was too deep (about halfway) then did the coire grogain circuit. The burn ain’t a burn, it’s a very fast flowing river, about 3 feet deep, and bloody cold!.
Hi, thanks for the heads up Greg. Do 5ten make wellies? 🙂 Will make sure we take it easy at the river crossing.
Hi all, just wanted to ensure you guys all knew this was an easy paced ride. I’ve been out of action for two months with a crap head cold/chest infection blah blah blah and now on second lot of antibiotics but am going stir crazy sitting in each weekend so I’ll be out tomorrow but I WONT be speedy so bring extra layers for when your waiting on me. Greig I know the burn and know how deep and fast flowing it can get – did you manage to cross it?
Dawn
Superb ride guys and thanks for taking its slow n easy for me. I am one happier and dirtier girl for being back out! 🙂
Aye Dawn, socks and boots off. Rather chilly isn’t it!. You had a decent day for it, glad to hear your getting better.
Greg.
Yeah, it was great timing with the weather as it cleared up when we started the ride giving us some great views of the snowy mountains. Even the river crossing was fine in the end. A top day out. Thanks Dawn for suggesting it!
Yep good ride, cheers for organising. I’ve stuck a few pics on the club Flickr page.
