Saturday 3rd May – Fairlie alps and social

Graham and myself have been talking for a while about getting a club ride at my local spot in the hills around Fairlie and Largs. As here is nothing in the calendar for the first weekend in May, and the trails have finally dried out, we’ve decided this would be a good time.

This is a good chance to get a wee bit of a sociable ride too, as cars aren’t really required from Glasgow. Plan would be something along the lines of train from Glasgow to Dalry, which gives a nice 6 mile warm up on quiet country lanes, and gives great access to the moors and trails within.

Spot of lunch and a beer in the Village inn, Fairlie (Schiehallion on draft, liver and bacon… Yum!) and back out, either finishing up in Largs, by way of the new purpose built trails at kelburn, or West Kilbride, both of which are on the train line back to Glasgow.

Sounds great and would be good to see some new trails. I’m meant to be doing DIY (to get it out of the way for the summer), but if the weather is ok, this sounds much more preferable!

  2. Hi Greg, I fancy this one after hearing you talk about it a couple of time. It better live up to expectations! No pressure…. 😉

….assuming I’m not spending the weekend doing my PGD reports of course….

  3. I really fancy this too, but can’t make that weekend! Got a 30th and a wedding.

If for any reason it changes date I can make any other weekend May!

  4. Would be very keen next time as my folks have recently moved down there. Cannot make this weekend as got 200km Moffat Toffee Audax.

  5. Cool, be good to see anyone who can make it, not seen you for ages Gavin. I’ll get some train times etc together next week, and get Maz to bake some cake.

    Mmmmm….. Cake….

  6. Greg – I’m double booked!! Turns out I’ve got a family engagement that Saturday which Alex just reminded me about today, meaning I can’t come along. B*gger! This is a ride I really fancy too…. Let me know if you run it again will you? And if Maz bakes a cake….

    Cheers,

    Gav

  7. Hi Greg, do you reckon the ride is do-able on a 32:18 singlespeed for someone with average fitness?

  8. You’d be off the bike on a lot of the climbs I’d imagine, Robin and I had a wee impromptu spin last night, as it was a lovely evening, didn’t go up top, but still managed over 1500ft of climbing in only 6 miles!.

    Your call G!

  9. Hi Greg. I really fancy this ride too so I’ll be there!! I’m a new member incase your wondering who the hell I am haha. Is it best just to meet at dalry train station, I’m coming from Balloch, Loch Lomond. Not exactly sure where dalry station is??

  10. Scott, get the 9.34 from central station with Graham, bound for Ayr. Takes 30 mins to get to Dalry station.

I’ll be at Dalry station waiting for you, we’ll head up to Robins house and ride up onto the moor from there. That’ll be good timing for lunch and a beer @ the village.

    Hi Greg,
I’m not going to make this, so don’t wait for me at the station. I am going to get my DIY out of the way before the summer is here for real….! Next time though!

  12. No worries Sam. weather looks decent, here’s hoping.

  13. Hi Folks – I’ll be on the 09:34 train from Central to Dalry if anyone else is coming along for this ride.

  14. If you didn’t make it along to this ride then you missed out on a cracker!! Some amazing trails down that way and a great variety from big moorlands, quarries, amazing woodland singletrack and some flowy manmade trails to finish on. All this with a couple of pub stops and plenty of banter from Team Ayrshire (Greg, Robin, Julie and Stuart).

A big thanks to Greg and the team for showing me the trails. If you want to know where they were then all you have to do is join in next time Greg posts the ride!

  15. Cheers Graham, great to see you down here, your appearance forced us to ride some trails that we haven’t ridden for a while!. Was a cracking day, I’m still enjoying it yet.

    Wee write up here.
