Sunday ride in NW highlands… inspiration

Looking for some ideas for a ride  somewhere from about Rannoch Moor towards Fort William area, meeting a mate who is coming from Spean Bridge. Original plan was to check out the right of way from Ardgour to Strontian (not sure what this is like so would be a bit of a hike-a-bike ride). Otherwise old classic from Glencoe – devils staircase and maybe over to Fort William one-way (might be able to factor in 2 cars with my mate), or return road/trail from Kinlochleven. Any other ideas of good rides up in this area? plan to be out all day! I also have space for someone in the car if there are any takers – plan to leave from Crookston early to start ride up there before 9 hopefully.

About StephenM

Part of the paisley peleton, kidding on to be a cyclocrosser as it is more socially acceptable than a roadie?... not enough much dirt, but way too much tarmac :-) my bike is often found outside coffee shops around renfrewshire or gleaming on the trails when it should be proper muddy!

  1. Sorry I missed your message – we were already in the area for the Macavalanche. Me and Lyndsey did the Glencoe/Devil’s/Kinlochleven loop on Sunday. Dusty trails and surprisingly few walkers made for a great day. If you are thinking of riding up that way this week bear in mind that the Scottish Six Day Trials are on until Saturday 7th May.

  2. I made it up yesterday too – rode out from Kinlochleven with my local(ish) mate Rob, left the ice factor at 10.30 and rode up to Mamore Lodge, up by Loch Eilde Mor to Lubielt Bothy (part of the tour de Ben Nevis route), then on toward Loch Trieg and Meannach Bothy. The plan was to then ride back up Gleann Iolairean and back to Blackwater Dam and the Ciarian Path. However with an absence of real knowledge of Gleann Iolairean trail conditions we did an out and back just before Loch Treig. A bid day out – it was back for a pint and macca cheese at the tailrace on Kinlochleven. We took the direct descent from just past Loch Eilde Mor to Kinlochleven which was hardcore and pretty much like a DH trail (stopped 3 times to cool brakes!). At the pub we bumped into 2 guys who did the full loop and apparantly the Glen was fine to Blackwater – a future GMBC ride then! but only in the dry (we got wet enough on route out). Pity we missed you, saw a fair amount of MTBers – hope you enjoyed the Macavalanche 🙂
