3 ferries road ride – june

An alternative to gmbc favourite ‘5 ferries’, the 3 ferries is some of the 5 in reverse, with a nice addition of ride round bute, and an amazing descent to Dunoon. Plan to start at gourock then ride to wemyss bay, ferry to rothsay, ride round island then ferry at colintravie. Pub lunch then tough road to dunoon, the swoopy 5 mile descent is sublime and worth the pain. Ferry home to gourock and a chippy! Plan to start about 9 or earlier, total distance is about 70 miles and ferry cost around £9 total. Times and miles will be confirmed, proposed date is June 10th, any gmbc roadies interested? A road, cx or a touring bike is fine, mtb would be a bit tough I reckon.

About StephenM

Part of the paisley peleton, kidding on to be a cyclocrosser as it is more socially acceptable than a roadie?... not enough much dirt, but way too much tarmac :-) my bike is often found outside coffee shops around renfrewshire or gleaming on the trails when it should be proper muddy!

  1. sounds a cracker and would love to come….unfortunately it’s same day as World Cup DH at Fort Bill and I’m heading up there with the family…

  2. Sorry Stephen, I can’t make it.

First 3 weeks in June for me are already tied up. I’d be up for it another time though.

  3. Hi Stephen,

I may be up for this, although i’ll need to watch I don’t overdo things, as this would be my 2nd road bike ride since 1986. Don’t want to turn into a roadie 😉

Mind you, I don’t actually possess a road bike so the chances of that are pretty slim. Still, it’s a horrible addiction, so it pays to be careful…

    😛

  4. I would also really like to do it but I’ve got bristol Bike Fest that weekend.

  5. happy to look at other dates if suits everyone better – maybe weekend after would be OK for some, I am flexible on dates. Forgot it was the world cup weekend!

  6. Hmm, sounds as though it may be fun. Would I need to take the rack off the Jake? No, of course not, what am I saying – it’s got a 26t granny… ;~p

  7. This date is OK for me, but if the general consensus is another date, the the 3rd or 24th June are OK for me. Still not done any of the ferries rides so keen to do it.

  8. Myself & Alison are keen to do this, either on the original date you suggested (10th June) or 24th June as suggested by Alan (but cannot do 3rd June).

  9. Lets do 24 June then, will post up more info early june, route, times and miles. There will be a pub lunch stop I reckon, or at least coffee and cake! 🙂

Pace will be usual GMBC road train – i.e. enough to feel it, not too much to hurt…

    • Hi Steven – can you add this as an event to the calendar? We’re trying to plan some 25th anniversary events around the time so it would be good to avoid a clash and having the event in the calendar helps us do that. cheers.

  10. If it’s the 24th June….count me in.

GMBC road train ave speed was 17mph at last years 5 Ferries.

  11. It’s a hopefully for me.

  12. Did this today with the Glasgow Couriers – 92 miles anti-clockwise from Paisley. It’s an excellent route and I’d encourage everyone to do it. Lunchstop in Largs sets you up nicely for the climb up Haylie Brae, then it’s downhill all the way back to Paisley.
