Great Glen Way/ West Highland Way over a Weekend in July…

Myself & Grant Hill are planning to ride the Great Glen Way (GGW) and West Highland Way (WHW) over a weekend in July (7th/8th). The plan is to take the train from Glasgow to Inverness on Friday 6th July (arriving ~19:30pm in Inverness). On the Saturday, we will ride the GGW and a bit of the WHW, staying in Kinlochleven. On the Sunday, we aim to ride back to Milngavie. A few years ago, I rode the Westie with Graham Anderton and Euan McDougal in a day (time flies). So this is the next step. The GGW/WHW ride was originally suggested by Paivi during the Balmaha weekend in January. Paivi & Dave might be joining Grant and myself but that needs to be confirmed.

If anyone else is keen then please get in touch. However, for logistical reasons, I am keen to limit the group size to ~5. Some folk have indicated that they might want to ride with us for part of the trip, that would be great. If there is a huge demand for this trip then I suggest that we split into a larger number of smaller groups, possibly riding over several weekends. The dates above have been chosen to try and avoid other events that will be going on in the area. Accommodation has now been booked for myself & Grant. As before, the riding direction is North to South (no discussion). Again, I am keen to take the ferry to Inversnaid to make the ride much more enjoyable, but we can decide closer to the time (but hoping to avoid the sprint that Graham & I needed to do last time).

At this stage, it is likely that Alison will drive from Glasgow to Kinlochleven on the Saturday and do some local stuff on the Sunday. There should be space in the car for 2 riders who might want to ride back to Glasgow on the Sunday – either by mtb or road. However, you must bring some chocolate brownies for myself & Grant (and Alison).

PS I should be out in Mugdock this Tuesday night. Following that, I am hoping to ride the Knockie Buckle most Tuesday nights if anyone else is interested, but cannot make many Wednesday nights.

  1. Gerry the Punisher,

It sounds like fun, but due to funds & a stag do abroad the following week, I won’t be able to commit. Although, I like the idea of meeting up & riding a section. We’ll chat tomorrow night & arrange something.

    Good luck

  2. I’ve been looking for a good challenge now that Kiroughtree has been cancelled, would really like to do this. I think I need to seriously up the training but with just over 2 months I reckon it’s doable (although I could regret saying that as we grind away at 3mph into a stiff SW breeze down the Great Glen.) Keep me posted about the plans.

    Tom

  3. Hi Gerry – can you pop this in the calendar so folks can see it coming up? I’m thinking I might join you for part of the WHW leg.
