Away Ride- Sunday 1st June – Ochils

Hi Folks,

To help with blowing the cobwebs away after the social ride, Dawn and I are planning to do an away ride this Sunday. Plan is to do Glen Devon, riding from Tillicoultry to Dollar first.

Here is the ride report from the last outing (correct one this time!)

If weather is not looking too good, we may re-consider with a shorter Ochils Ride starting from Bridge of Allan (an alternative to Dumyat).

Ochils/Glen Devon Ride

A big day out (36km, 1200m climb) in an area we’ve not ridden for quite a while – the eastern end of the Ochil Hills.  The ride starts in Dollar (not quite sure of the parking there these days but try for space beside the Dollar Burn) then heads along to Alva along cycle track before climbing steeply up into the Ochils.  Once up top expect it to be exposed but with big open views (if the cloud permits!).  Descends via Glen Devon and Glen Quey  into Tillicoultry.  The post-ride plan is to then head to Bridge of Allan to sample the delights of the chippy.  :)

EDIT (by Graham):  the route would start at the Golf Club car park just on the outskirts of Tilly, cycle track to Dollar then up and into the hills, returning to the car park after about 30km and 800m of climbing.  There aren’t any facilities en route to speak of (possible tea stop at a boathouse in Glen Devon).  I can provide a GPX route file but I’d recommend a map & compass too.

It’s not massively technical as it’s mainly land rover track and open moorlands but the climb IS steep and it’s exposed so pack appropriate waterproof clothing.  Once into the hills there’s nowhere to stop for food so pack enough food & water.

  1. Hi. The ride you’re talking about Sam is slightly different to the one that you’ve copied + linked to. I’m assuming you mean the ride we did where Graeme B ended up landing in the only patch of nettles for miles around and where we grabbed a mid-ride cuppa at the boathouse? The one you’ve linked to was the “Ride From Hell” ™ where Dawn, Elizabeth, Jack and myself got lost in the fog in the Ochils. I’ll add some more accurate info to describe the route when I’ve got time tomorrow.

oops. You are indeed right that I meant the one we did last year…. I’ll find the right description and stick up although sounds pretty similar…
However, the weather is now looking very questionable for a big day out… 🙁

      • Hi Sam – I’ve edited the original post with some facts. If you’re doing the ride and want detailed waypoints I can get you the details. Thought I’d wait to see what you decide considering the weather before sending the details.

  2. Took me about a week to recover fully from that crash!! Seeing a nettle patch still gives me the shivers…

So, does this mean you are not coming then Graeme? Think the nettles may not have grown so much this time..

  4. I’m up for this, I was wanting a big day out tomorrow. What time are you meeting for? And are we just meeting up in Dollar town centre or at the burn? (How long is the burn?)
