Budget bike light – 5w LED

Got a great wee light from Aldi yesterday – 5w Cree LED, 500 lumens they say and a nifty wee push/pull zoom – looks bright in the back garden test and cost a mere £10.99, bought a twofish light mount from ebay for an extra £4.50 that fits it to bars or your lid.

About StephenM

Part of the paisley peleton, kidding on to be a cyclocrosser as it is more socially acceptable than a roadie?... not enough much dirt, but way too much tarmac :-) my bike is often found outside coffee shops around renfrewshire or gleaming on the trails when it should be proper muddy!

  1. Fine price, have you tried it yet? Interested to know how you get on. I bought a cheap Cree LED light (not 500 lumens, mind) from a guy on the London Fixed Gear and Singlespeed site and it vibrated itself into darkness during the first four miles on the commute. Not sure whether that says something about the quality of the light or of Glasgow roads.

  2. Works fine – not a great amount of light for claimed 500 lumens but fine as a commute / back-up / helmet light. The first ride caused the lens to fall off – not factory tight! 100psi tyres and rigid forks did not soften our rough roads enough. Luckily I found the lens and screw cap (on a wet road is no mean feat) – a bit of loctite threadlock should prevent further issues. Battery life is a bit unknown – someone on singletrackworld reckoned 40 min with 2 AAA’s – It has done a 1 hr ride and still looks fine – time will tell, but I will buy good chargables… it’s only a back-up light anyway incase my equally bargain ‘magicshine 900 lumen’ runs out of juice!
