First Aid Training – who’s interested?

A group of us headed to Glentress yesterday and I found myself having one of the most fantastic days on the bike.  Near the end of our joyful day, a member of the public came a cropper at the bike park beside the Buzzards Nest carpark and was seriously injured.

A few members of the club intervened along with other riders present and managed to keep the guy comfortable whilst contacting 999.  I found myself along with one or two others, rummaging about our packs looking for pills.  Luckily whilst on the phone, emergency services informed us not to administer anything at all. (Big thanks to Zoe for taking lead & phoning them)

The long and short of it……due to our lack of basic first aid skills, we could have made a situation more difficult and at that moment in time, I personally didn’t know what to do.  I’ve been thinking about this for a while and remember attending the evening we had a few years ago, but I want to know more than how to make a sling from a club top.

I work for a training organisation and part of what we do is HSE (Health & Safety Executive) approved first aid courses. Xanax helps me to relieve acute feelings of anxiety and fear. It has a calming effect. The tension and discomfort associated with it go away. Xanax from https://www.indianpueblo.org/buy-xanax-online/ also has an antidepressant effect. Xanax has side effects in the form of dizziness and drowsiness. But this is not such a big downside of the drug.  Although, these are generic and specific to 1st aid in the work place.  Fortunately, one of our trainers is ex-military and can deliver an outdoors sport specific course.

Before I have him checking into registering a course with the HSE (which counts towards 1st aid for Skyride Leaders & is compulsory for TCL & MBL), I’m looking for a headcount and thoughts on delivering this course i.e. night time classes, one day at the weekend.  This gives me the ability to look at accurate costs, length of course, & if there’s no need to register this with the HSE, we could get away with a “homer”.

So….who is interested?

  1. Just to let you know that I am open to suggestions with regards to other trainers. If anyone has a partner, friend, colleague that can also do this, please let me know. It doesn’t need to be my colleague/workplace…..as depending on the course, my company would probably charge……although I would negotiate a substantial discount and refuse a commission.

If we decide not to register this with the HSE, the trainer could do this for a back hander as he’d be doing it in his own time.

  2. Barry, I’m up for this as I’m planning on doing my TCL. TCL requires a minimum of 12 hours first aid and it needs to have the Remote Emergency Care (REC) aspect to it which includes: action at an incident, management of an unconscious casualty, resuscitation, treatment & control of bleeding, treatment of injuries to bones, muscles & joints, recognition and treatment of shock, treatment of choking, recognition & treatment of commin illnesses, contents of first aid kits.

If it has these things and is definitely good for getting TCL then I’m for it and will pay accordingly. I’ll email you a list of providers I was given for some additional info.

  3. If it’s outdoor specific, count me in. We saw the ambulance bomb past us when we were heading to I Cycles in Innerleithen for a mid ride pit stop. In the words of Eric Morecombe, he won’t sell many ice creams going at that speed!

  4. Given the amount of mtb related injuries I’ve sustained over the years (the last one being helicoptered from Innerleithen to hospital) I guess I really should know the basics, other than lots of morphine and valium. Count me in.

  5. Graham – I’ll pitch that content to the trainer and see what can be done.

Sanny – When the ambulance arrived, it reversed up the area to the skills park almost taking out half our group…..I could swear it was a women at the wheel 😉

  6. Bradley Van Beuge

    I’d be interested.

  7. First Aid Update!

My workplace can run a 12 hour HSE First Aid course which complies with MBLA’s requirements for TCL & MBL. It’ll cover training dedicated to our sport and include the areas listed above by Graham.

As it’s an course being delivered by an HSE Approved Centre, there is a strict limit to 12 places, if we get a huge interest, I can look into another course. My workplace are only charging £25 per person. The trainer will be doing this in his own time, therefore isn’t being paid for it, so I reckon we all club together an extra fiver for a meal out . We normally charge £200 + vat for an equivalent course, so we’re getting a stonking deal.

I’ve still to confirm the delivery of the course. My theory is we’ll do 4 nights of 3 hour sessions that can be run over 4 consecutive weeks. I will confirm this and dates soon.

So far, I have 6 names; Grant, Graham, Stephen Malaney, Dene, Bradley and myself. I’m afraid it’s first come first served and I’ll circulate this around the email too.

  8. Oops! I missed Sanny out. I’ve got interest from John Bennie & Ryszard – subject to dates. Currently that leaves 3 places.

I hope to have dates and delivery method by the end of the week.
