GPS Map Help!

Looking for advice and help using an Android mobile as my GPS. Currently have Endomondo as the Trail/Route app but they don’t use OS maps, so there is no detail, just white and green spaces.

Thanks to a GMBC post I signed up for the free, 3 month OS subscription! Installed the OS Mapfinder on my mobile. I can now see all the UK on my laptop, create routes and export them to mobile but I cant get the 1:25000 OS maps onto my mobile! I need maps on my mobile rather than constant uploading of data as most of the places I go have no mobile coverage!

Any ideas for easy OS map use on an Android so I can see where I am and plot the trail i’ve ridden? Forget OS and use Viewranger? Forget the mobile and buy a GPS?

  1. Hi Simon, I’ve not properly got into the OSMaps app on my android phone but I noticed the same as you – it seems to need a mobile data connection but I wanted to have the maps to hand, on the device. I’m still using Viewranger for recording routes and navigation. I’ve used it for a couple of years and it’s fine for what I need so as I’ve paid for lots of Viewranger map tiles already I’m going to be reluctant to switch.

Before you spend any cash on Viewranger maps head over to Singletrackworld Forum and do some searches on GPS and mapping. There’s a few other apps worth looking at; Back Country Navigator and one which Rich Hebb mentioned yesterday (OSMand I think).

  2. I’ve been very impressed with Back Country Navigator, enough so that I bought the full version after using the perfectly serviceable free demo for several rides. You can point it at a number of map sources, one being Multimap which gives you OS mapping to 1:25000 for free. Downloading map sections for use offline is very easy, helps if you have a decent size SD card to save them to. You can also do the usual stuff like load a GPX file to follow, save track logs, mark waypoints. You can even tag photos with your position. I’m running it on a fairly old low-powered phone with no problems.

  3. Try Locus Map Pro (there is a free version too it will be best to try it before buying full version) with Locus Map tweak. You should be able to chose Bing OS maps. You can then download it to your mobile device and use it offline. I also have a almost entire Scotland in OS maps which work in Locus and share it with you.
