Last weekend in June – Lake district anyone?

I’m planning to go down and stay at Borrowdale Youth hostel on friday 26th and stay the saturday night too. The western fells around there tend to be quieter, presenting more of an opportunity to ride cheekier stuff away from the gluepot areas of the lakes.

Plan would be something biggish and hike-a-bikey on the saturday, possibly up and around Whiteless pike, but got a few options in mind. Then a route I did last month riding from the YH up to Sprinkling Tarn via Langstrath, then the best descent I’ve ridden in the lakes so far, miles of awesomeness down past angle tarn to Stockley bridge. Probably about 5 hours, a bit of pushing but not much really.

I think Graham is planning on coming down on the friday night and riding the saturday only, so he’ll probably have room if anyone fancies that, I’d certainly have room for 1 or 2 if anyone wants to ride both days. Both rides will be very rocky with some steep stuff too, if you’re confident riding the likes of Ben Lomond/Cobbler type rides, that’s ace.

Probably need to book quite quickly, as Borrowdale is quite a small hostel, if it’s booked up there are lots of other places around to stay.

  1. Hi Greg, yip, count me in for the Friday night – always going to be an interesting weekend in the Lakes when you’re organising it 😉 I finish work early on Friday’s so I’ll probably head down early afternoon – there’s a space in my car for 1. Downside is that if someone takes the space they’ll need a run back up on the Sunday.

  2. I’d love to but can’t…going to Poland for a couple of days…if it was on 4/5 th July than I could go.

  3. That’s a shame, next time Krzysztof.

I’m all booked up, £49 for 2 nights using the YHA membership discount.

  4. Just saw this post Greg / Graham. I am now booked up!
Prob won’t be able to get away from Glasgow until half 4 earliest. Returning Sunday, so might be best to take my own car?
Looking forward to it – good practice for the Alps the following week! 🙂
I’ve tried updating WP with my details again so hopefully I’ll get email through now…

  5. Just seen this- would love to come along too. Will phone hostel tomorrow and see if there’s still space. Gav, happy to car share if that suits you.

  6. Hi Greg – that’s me signed up for the Friday night now. Anyone else thinking about it, then be quick. It’s showing limited availability at the hostel for the Saturday night. Camping’s an option I suppose.

  7. Brilliant, the more the merrier!.

The hostel is a nice wee quiet one, breakfast can be had for a fiver, but there’s a full kitchen too if you want to make your own. They also do food at night, which has to be pre-ordered. Also two pubs within 15 mins walk that both do really good food, and a cafe along the road in Rosthwaite that does awesome cake!.

Got a few routes in mind, we’ll go with what the majority want.

    Roll on next friday!.

  8. Did you get booked in Elizabeth?.

A few of the routes we could do have no option for mid ride sustenance, so some trail food would be good thinking.

If you don’t get a chance to get something before you leave, Booths in Keswick is great for picking up nice stuff – it’s a decent sized supermarket next to the bus station in Keswick, it’ll be on the right on the way to Borrowdale. Their car park is pay and display, but free if you are buying stuff, so no need for a ticket.

    Hi Greg,
John and I are heading down to lakes tonight until saturday, so can hopefully hook up for beer n’ banter fruday night? We are going to camp at Chapel Home Farm which looks pretty close to the hostel. not sure if we’ll join you for a ride on saturday as 1. depends waht you do! and 2. depends if you want us too!! Graham has my number….
Incase no reception, shout if you know which pub you most likley to be on friday night…. Sam

    • Sam, Graham and I were planning on heading out for a couple of hours on the friday night on the bikes, maybe about 6/7 – 8/9? So we won’t be far from the hostel, which has a bar – probably be the best bet?.

Or come out with us on friday night, not planning on going very far, maybe just up cat bells and back, or up the road to Watendlath and over to Rosthwaite?.
