Mugdock MTB Orienteering Event: Sat. 20th April

As mentioned at the AGM, we’re pleased to announce that GMBC are hosting the 2nd round of the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering Spring League, sponsored by Alpine Bikes, on Saturday 20th April at Mugdock Country Park.

If you are unfamiliar with MTB orienteering (called Trailquest in the past) then the objective is to visit as many of the 30 checkpoints as possible within the 3 hour time limit.  The event is within a defined area and a map and list of checkpoints will be provided on the day.  It’s up to you which route you ride so you take in as many checkpoints before your 3 hours is up.

The event is open to adults and children over the age of 15 (or over the age of 12 as part of a generations team).  You can enter as a solo or a pair.  There will be a fantastic selection of prizes & spot prizes for competitors.  The event is now available to enter via this BMBO page.

Prices to enter the event are as follows:

  • £15 for adult solos
  • £25 for adult teams
  • £9  for youth solos (aged 15 – 21)
  • £15 for youth teams (aged 15 – 21)
  • £15 for generation (adult + youth aged 12 to 21)

NB: enter before 13th April and receive a 10% discount.  Entry on the day is also possible.

All entrants must be a full or day-rider member of the BMBO.  Basic membership is free but has an additional £1 surcharge on entering the event.  Just go to:  http://www.bmbo.org.uk/membership-information/

Given our connection with the area and the fact it’s a local venue for a lot of us it would be great to see a strong representation from GMBC riders on the day.  Do you reckon you could get a podium finish or challenge some of your clubmates?

If you want to get in some practice before the Mugdock event then there the first round of the series is on at Aberfoyle on 30th March.

Volunteers Needed:

Also, in addition to the organising team we need a couple of volunteers to help out on the day.  Tasks include setting out & retrieving checkpoints & signage, directing people to sign off and start points, a small amount of car park attendance (until event starts), course “marshalling” (marshalling is not official or static but it would be good to have a few folks to ride around the course area during the event to keep an eye out for any problems).

We reckon this is a great opportunity to show the club in a great light by putting on a fun event that will cater to a wide variety of riders.  It’s as competitive as you want to make it and you can join up checkpoints using trails you know (within the boundaries and restrictions of the course map).

If you have any questions about the event or if you can volunteer then please contact smbo@gmbc.org.uk or speak to Stuart, Jack, Ruairidh, Chris or Graham

  1. I am going along to the Aberfoyle round anybody fancy coming along to make a pair?

      • Happy to make up a pair however, I now need to be home by 14:00 or I will face a fate worse than death, so planning on being ready to ride at the 09:30, which I understand is the earliest start time. Unfortunately, my time constraints probably mean I will miss the prize giving. Not that I expect to be worrying the leader board. If you’re happy to be subject to my tight time scales I can offer a lift.
