One for the roadies… and calling flying scot owners

On saturday the 1st September it is the Georgetown cup – a team time trial held at Inchinnan, need to get 8 riders in each team, entry only £8, all money to charity. It’s a popular event and plenty time for some sneaky practice.

I am entering with (whispers) a roadie club, but I am sure there are plenty of GMBC riders that could get a good time on the 7.2 mile course – all flat. There will be some catering and drinks – again all for accord hospice. The losing team gets the ‘Georgetown Pie’

In addition they are trying to get as many flying scot owners to show off their bikes, money will be collected from people putting in a bucket for each of your favourite bike (for charity) and the winning bike gets a prize too… so [cough] simon h [cough] if you have a classy bike, get it shown off, or come for a lookie!

Part of the paisley peleton, kidding on to be a cyclocrosser as it is more socially acceptable than a roadie?... not enough much dirt, but way too much tarmac :-) my bike is often found outside coffee shops around renfrewshire or gleaming on the trails when it should be proper muddy!

  1. Thanks Stephen. Looks interesting. Riding a 70 yo fixed Scot is just the excuse I need for posting a ‘non-Wiggo’ time.

    Are you moving closer to the dark side? A roadie club?

  2. I am indeed, doing time trials on my cross bike, putting long stem and rigid forks on mtb… I have been turned. Be good to see you on the flying Scot, there was a bit of chat about Scots, mercians, fixed wheels… Right up your street. A guy did the tt on his Scot last week, 42×18 non-fixed, needed bigger gear!

  3. from memory a 46×18 is 5 pedal revs per mph- so 18 mph is a nice 90rpm. thats a nice general fixed gear. flat tt like the georgetown? youd want 52 x18 not 42 18

  4. I’ve got my entry in (first time I’ve used my British Cycling number). If the ebay delivery fairy flaps her wings I’ll use 50×18, otherwise it’ll be the current 46×18 ratio.

  5. Will be good to see you there, showing off bike and riding it too! I am off for the Glasgow couriers Saturday morning practice… Got a 19.26 to beat, using my brothers proper road bike to see if it is faster than crosser.

  6. Over 100 signed up to this! though Simon was odd on his old school fixie against all these carbon aero’d roadies… apparently Jack that rides for Thomson’s is riding a penny farthing, and Martin from the shop is doing it on a Surley monster bike! don’t expect a sub 20 though 🙂

  7. Couple of training runs on the commute this week, although I’m not expecting traffic lights and numpty drivers on Saturday. Anything more than a mile on the drops and I’ve a sore neck. I’ll be keeping the penny farthing and the Surley company.

  8. Fitted tt bars for event, bit high at front end on cross bike.. Feels faster though. 160 entered now and a load of flying Scots, there will be catering too, wife and kids on cake stand. Should be a good event. 🙂

  9. A fine was to spend a Saturday morning – it only hurt for 20 minutes and 30 seconds. There were plenty of people to talk Flying Scot with (never seen so many in one place) and cakes/tea. A very good job of organising and staging done by Glasgow Couriers. Lovely to see Al, Lyndsey and Stephen and well done with your rides.

  10. Your flying scot looked ace, another highlight was the lotus bike out on the course (like boardman’s one!). I was happy as smashed my PB by over 40 secs – thanks to flask of strong coffee and some TT bars. Good work from the Thomson’s boys who took out the surley monster bike and a penny farthing on the course – 28 secs on the farthing in a full aero helmet and skin suit was the funniest thing I have seen on a bike 🙂 loads of money raised for charity too by the 160+ riders who turned out. Simon represented GMBC in style by riding his pride and joy, fixed as usual 🙂
