Sunday ride – fancy a big one?

Over the last few weeks, some of us have been tackling longer & steeper rides than the normal Mugdock meander……and they’ve been blooming fantastic rides.

The current weather forecast looks good, so where to this Sunday??  I was thinking about Dumyat or Ben Lomond, although they’ll probably be littered with walkers.

So, I’m open to suggestions.  Don’t mind travelling and can offer a space in my car.

Cheers

  1. Forecast does look good, I’d be up for something bigger and further afield (if I can get a lift), although neither of those does it for me unless Dumyat can be spun out into a day ride. I’ll try to think of something more constructive :~) Off the top of my head: Pitlochry, Auchendrain, Pentlands?

    • Auchendrain…. I could be tempted. Not sure if I have transport or not (so might need a lift).

    • Not keen on Auchendrain and don’t know Pitlochry/Pentlands routes. I have space for a lift. Graham mentioned that he’s keen on venturing to Ben Cleuch (highest point in the Ochils). I don’t know his plans this weekend, but that could be possible. It’d turn it into an all day ride.

Check out this for an idea of route http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/ben-cleuch.shtml

      • I need to be careful and not venture too far afield, last week I never got home till 9.30pm and it landed me on the naughty step.

      • That’s what maps are for :~) I did a big Ochils loop a few years ago, think it was Kenny Wilson’s book, and it certainly went in the area described, although started well out to the east. I’ll try and dig it out.

      • Yeah, Sanny & Pete had talked about a big figure of 8 loop at the Dollar end of the Ochils, would be keen on that or a variation of it but not this weekend – I’m visiting friends and scoping out new stuff near Callander/Aberfoyle.

  2. Auchendrain isn’t what it was. A lot of the tech from the descent has been removed sadly.

I’m still on for a mid week Lomond bash when you are free so just give me the nod. We’ll save it for a nice night….soooo, 2017 then going by the rain of late!

What forecast are you guys looking at? MWIS looks gash for Saturday and the long range isn’t too good either.

    • Mid week ride for Lomond sounds good. I ain’t doing it in the pissing rain though….leave it to a nice Wed night.

BBC Weather for Glasgow looks good, although they’re known to lie like a cheap Japanese watch.

      • Indeed, ’tis the season for mid-week further afield rides. If you plan something then pop it in the online calendar as soon as you’ve agreed a date. I’ll look for a suitable date for a mid-week Dumyat ride. And maybe we need a mid-week Kilpatricks too?

    • [Auchendrain] The descent’s only a short section of what’s still a great big-skies XC loop, though. When the weather’s in your favour, anyway ;~)

  3. Ben Chonzie or Glen Tilt (but I think Ryszard has done this recently) I can get into Metcheck so using BBC weather, looks good for sunday

  4. Okay, as the weekend is closing in….we’re leaving Dumyat, Kilpatricks & Ben Lomond for a week night. Graham can’t do Ben Cleuch this w/end so we’ll give that a miss.

So, I’m up for Glen Finglas loop with the alternative start point. See here for details http://www.incallander.co.uk/cycling/glenfinglas.htm#alt. I’ve never done this route before and always hear great reviews of it.

10am start with an isotonic shandy & nimbles in the Byre at the end. Who’s in? I have space for 1 in my car.

    • whilst the Barry’s banter and the Byre’s beer are tempting, I would be up for Ben Cleuch if Graham is keen on doing it on sunday

      • That was also my preferred ride Chris, but according to Graham’s reply above, he isn’t free to do it this weekend. I’m definitely up for it soon though.

I’ve just been informed that Glen Finglas is all fire road 🙁 I think I’ll just cancel that one…..back to the drawing board.

        • Check the profile on the route I gave the link to – it’s a fair challenge, the ascent to the highest point *will* have you swearing.

          • Agreed Glen Finglas is fire road, what about Glen Tilt or Ben Chonzie then? Would be a shame to miss out on a good day……

  5. Rough Glen Tilt route at http://www.sharemyroutes.com/routes/United-Kingdom/Blair-Atholl-Perth-and-Kinross-Scotland/Glen-Tilt-rough/elevationOSmap.aspx. I think it came in at about 55km, 7hrs in total including a navigational hiccough (bear left at 940683) and lengthy lunch stop. Grant put together a detailed ride report on here, should be easy to find.

  6. I’m in for a Sunday ride…let me know the plans.

I’m sure I can navigate Glen Tilt in part :-/

  7. Chris & I are doing the Glen Finglas loop. Meeting at 10am at Brig o Turk.

If anyone wishes to join us, call me on (zero 77 six 6 four 6 33 six nine).
