Winter Trail Centre Rides

As we get into late autumn and through into winter I’m planning a regular monthly excursion to some trail centres, probably at the end of each month.  We don’t tend to ride trail centres that often (with the exception of Cathkin perhaps) as there’s so many great natural trails to explore but trail centres have their place, especially in a Scottish winter.

So, where would you like to ride this autumn/winter?  There’s a few obvious favourites but perhaps you know of a few, less familiar all-weather trails – post them up and I’ll add them to the list.

  1. Good idea. I’ve never ridden Kiroughtree, been meaning to at some point so it’s high up on my list!

  2. I’ll 2nd Kirroughtree, it’s the only 7 Stanes centre I’ve not visited.

Not been to Drumlanrig in a long time and fancy GT soon. I’ve just heard they’ve put the parking prices up at GT…now £5 for a car, £20 for a campervan.

  3. Sam_I hate hillclimbs_Groves

As well as the usual 7 Stanes stuff, Glenlivet trails is due to open sometime before Christmas… may not be as exciting /challenging at KT black, but would be good to support new centre.
And Rik Allsop currently building some new trails at Comrie Croft… it may be short n’ sweet but it’s bit closer than Drum, and loads of fun, especially if a bit wet!

Just a few more ideas into the mix!

    • Comrie Croft – noted. Also, probably a better chance that the cafe will be open out of season than the one at Drumlanrig.
Glenlivet – been hearing about this for ages, I think they’re a bit behind schedule. Agreed, worth supporting when it’s open.

  4. I’d quite like to do Glentress Black before I head South for the winter. I’d also like to go to Kirroughtree again, but it’s far enough away that I think it really needs a two-day trip to D&G.

    • Hi Grant – yep, best as part of a 2 day trip, probably twinned with Dalbeattie. I’d talked about a weekend trip down there – I’ll speak to you and Barry on Tuesday about this.

  5. Kirroughtree is my personal favourite 7 stanes route. Meeting at the monument car park reduces driving time but route starts with a stiff climb.

Minch moor descent at Innerleithan is also way up the list for the wide grin factor .

  6. I used to park there too, As it means the cafe is half way round, and you’re fresh for the best bits of the black – Talnotry and onto Hissing Sid etc. I only stopped parking there a s I got a Police sticker on my car warning of numerous break ins.

Not been to Kirro this year, need to remedy that soon.

    • Right then. A trip to Kirroughtree will be organised. Looking at dates of various other trips and hostel accommodation let’s go for Sunday 24th for KT. I’ll post up more details but looking at an overnighter in Newton Stewart on the Saturday for anyone wanting to ride on the Saturday (eg. Dalbeattie or elsewhere).

  7. I think Tom and me are away that weekend 🙁

  8. I think there are a few of us heading to Kirro next tuesday or wednesday, if anyone else is off for the school week, feel free to join.
