A Summer Of Fun With GMBC

I thought I’d put up a wee summary of some of the club events coming up over the next month or 2 so you can plan around your holidays.  Of course we’ll have a wonderful, hot dry summer to get in lots of midge-free riding and socialising (ever the optimist!)  Here’s a few ideas to whet your appetite…….

  • The Intro rides continue – 7pm every Wednesday through summer, beginners are very welcome – enjoy the lighter nights and some sociable riding with the club.  If you’re new to the sport or the club then please feel free to join us for a wee spin.  Rides will be tailored to suit those present.  NB: next Wednesday’s intro ride in Aberfoyle.
  • Sat. 12th July – Club Summer BBQ (Mugdock Park) – see the post below from Tom.  I’d say to everyone, it’s a great evening out, lots of fun and banter to be had.  It would be great to see new members along too – don’t be shy, come along and join in, you’re more than welcome.  Just post up to let us know you’re coming.
  • Sat. 19th July – Queen’s Baton Relay event (club hall) – details are still a bit sketchy but I’ve been told 10am – 1pm, the sports club will be hosting a “come & try” event where all the clubs based at MBSC can promote their sport and what they do.  We’ll have Dales Cycles along doing a Dr. Bike tune up and we’ve invited Glasgow Dynamos (kids cycling club) to offer something for the kids (probably some cycle skills coaching).  For adults, we may take small groups out for wee spins round the local area.  The baton will make a 30min stop at the club hall at some point during the 3 hours.  Maybe a local bike ride and some food/drink afterwards??
  • Commonwealth Games cycling events – road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking (see the club calendar) – I’m sure we’ll have a squad of folks going to all of these.  It would be good to meet up with folks at the mountain biking and hopefully the road race.
  • Summer socials – there’s been some talk of a few pub trips over summer – keep your eyes peeled or if you want, get it up on the calendar.
  • Selkirk singletrack weekender – planning a weekend trip down to Selkirk (after the Games) with an overnight stay.  Tons of awesome natural riding down there.  Or trail centres if you like that sort of thing.  Exact date TBC, mid/late August probably.
  • Epic, big mountain days out – a few folks have expressed an interest in some big, remote rides – suggestions on a postcard please.  For example, Glen Kinglass out & back, Glen Tilt loop, Angus Glens, Lochnagar, tour de Ben Nevis route, Lake district day trip.
  • Weekends away – southwest/Galloway, Laggan/Aviemore, Lakes, Peak district, a 2 day Argyll/Trossachs loop I had in mind – any other suggestions??
  • Cross Bike Rides (aka non-techy MTB routes) – Ardgarten, Rob Roy Way
  • Maybe some road riding?? – Perthshire/Etape loop, re-run of the epic 5 Ferries

Any other ideas?  It’s over to you…………

  1. Defo up for some cross bike action. Always wanted to cycle round Arron, no idea why but its on my to do list?!?!

  2. Also really keen on a bivvy night if anyone fancies something daft like that…

  3. All sounds Gd to me.

  4. Always up for a good bivvie or bothy ride, could do weekend of 19/20th if anyone is mad enough. Bothy might be more sensible with the old midge / tick situation!

    • How about this: http://www.cairngormsloop.net/map.html

300km Over two days, with a b&b/bunkhouse (I’m too soft for the cold and too lazy to carry camping gear…) at Braemar or Avimore – 26-27 July or 2-3 August.

*Edit* The more I think about this, the more I want to do it. I’ll put a proper post up tonight.

      • I’ve been thinking of this but 300km in 2 days = mission impossible for me and my big, heavy bike…that’s why I plan on doing smaller, my own custom loop(s) based on these provided in your link. Just waiting for a good weather (haha…wishfull thinking).

Graham. Is this the ride Gerry organised last year? If so, Robin have word. They did it over 3 days and some of it was very slow… Gav and Ryz did it too if you want to ask them.

        • Hi Sam/all – the Cairngorms Loop is a similar route, uses some of the same trails but is longer. The one Gerry organised was from the Wild Trails (vol 1) book – the one with wee Al on the front! It’s a 200km loop which they did over 3 days and has a fair bit of fireroad. I joined for day 1. 300km over 2 days seems pretty epic.

    • 19th is the Queens Baton event at MBSC, just in case you’re interested.

  5. Trail centres – i’d love to !!
7 stanes Glentress – i’d love to !! (bike park + black grade trails 🙂
The only problem for me is that there is no train service nearby…
