Another lovely Wed night ride – Loch Ardinning

…. Six was the magic number last night as Pistol Pete, Iainc, Chris J, myself, Rossco and Gavin headed out for a spin. Dougalston was despatched in quick time followed by a spin around the reservoir as we headed up to Loch Ardinning. Taking an alternative route I had scoped out a few weeks ago and which will make for a nice summer alternative, we popped out on the main Loch Ardinning trails having avoided the slough of despond where the cattle have done their best to make things unpleasant.

Heading round on the extended route, the trails weren’t as hard frozen as I had hoped though I have to admit to a certain smugness as my newly acquired fat bike floated where others sank. Looking at the clown shoe wheels, it just shouldn’t be fun to ride but it is and remarkably good on a normal club ride.

The return leg saw us heading back in via snakey where we bumped into Alpine Dave for a bit of craik before heading back to the club.

It was cold and clear which made for a brisk ride. It’s just a shame there weren’t more folk out to enjoy the evening!

  1. Nice to see you’re following the trend for silly bikes. Tried a unicycle yet?

  2. was a great ride indeed, riding behind Sanny was just like tailing a Derny at the Velodrome 🙂

  3. Behind the derny? Do you always ride about 100 metres off the back? Ha! Ha!

    Dene

It’s only a matter of time before you get one!

  4. There are less noxious fumes coming out from the back if a derny bike! 8-/

  5. Sanny – the guy right behind the Derny is the leader – Doh 🙂 get thee to the Velodrome Club session and get with it – there is still space for you !

….and the Derny is usually ridden by a balding middle aged guy with no style…..

Must say though, the way the fat bike floated over the boggy stuff without leaving any trace was quite uncanny

  6. Hang on!

Pete was in front of you…. that’s just not nice calling my friend balding and middle aged with no style!

Aye, the fattie does seem to float. I need to get my head round the way it floats over the gloop.

  7. Hahaha 🙂 anyway, back to the ride, a nice variation up to Loch Ardinning and a belter of an evening. Does beg the questions as to where everyone else was though, as you say ????

  8. Sounds like you had a good ride on Wednesday. We had 6 folks out on Tuesday (Jack, Ruairidh, Eilidh, Graeme, Neil and myself). We managed 22km riding all over the place. A great night to be out for sure and the cuppa at the end was well needed. We also wondered where everyone else was; a cracking clear night would normally have brought out more folks. Maybe next week?

  9. I was out again tonight with my mate Roddy. A lovely ride out to Kilearn and back on the pipe track going along the high path and returning via the Westie. We didn’t see a soul. It was a bit chilly but not damp so made for a lovely ride. I was expecting to see some folk but no one was to be found. I reckon folk just aren’t used to the good weather!

    • Sanny – I think I saw you last night on your fat bike – passing M&S around 745 ish yeh!!! I spotted the bike (I have a hankering for some fat tyre action) and tried to have a good look as I drove past, on my way to Esporta (sad). I almost stopped to ask about the bike – didn’t think it would be someone from the club with it being a Thurs. Hopefully I’ll be out sometime soon and maybe catch-up with your experience of the pug! (It is a pug isn’t it?) Any pics you can share drool drool : )

  10. Hi Steve

It’s a Salsa Beargrease and it’s silly fun. The lightweight wheels (in so far as fat bike wheels can be light) really spin along well. It weighs around 28.5 pounds and just makes me smile. I never really considered one until I found out that Salsa were making a lightweight one. A spin on a mate’s Moonlander convinced me I needed one.

Come along and if I’m riding it, you’re welcome to try it.

    Cheers

    Sanny
