Arran Weekender – 7th / 8th September

Hi,

There has been some chat about organising a weekend trip to Arran this year. For those of you who haven’t been mountain biking on Arran are a lot of great trails to suit all tastes. The Arran bike club (http://www.arranbikeclub.com) have done a great job linking up trails and putting routes on their website.

The rough plan would be travel over on Friday night (ferries are at 1515, 1800 and 2030, or 0700 Sat morning), avoiding taking the cars if at all possible. Ideally we would get some sort of hostel type accomodation near Brodick. On the Saturday we could aim for a big ride like this:

On the Sunday we could do one of the short but still brilliant rides like this:

There are a number of other routes and variations possible if anyone fancies something different.

If you are interested in coming post up here and I’ll look into accommodation next week. I’d like to book something by the end of next week once I get an idea of numbers.

    Tom,

You shouldspeak to Greg about accomodation- he knows a NTS place near Brodick that will do 2 nights. No hostels in Brodick- only one is Lochranza. There is also one at Corrie, but the club stayed there a couple of year’s ago, and it is pretty manky. All agreed we’d not want to be there again.

    Another option is this place.

John and I stayed here last year- it may not work out if you don’t have enough couples, but they have a variety of cottages which sleep different numbers. They will also rent for only 2 nights, which is often a problem for self-catering. nent numbers. It is certainly cheap- and would be good for Grant. Or, if boys don’t mind sharing a double bed!!

Happy to help sort out accomodation for this one. Love biking on Arran. Another option is the Cock of Arran ride. Great if its a nice day! And, defianlty one to consider if only accomodation turns out to be Lochranza hostel. This would be do-able, if we could take one car with luggage…..

p.s. You can put my name down for this one- John working a Rat Race event.

  6. I’d be up for the Sat ride, but would need to do it as a day trip – could get the 0700 ferry over and the 1920 back

  7. Reckon I’m up for this one – haven’t done Arran before so keen to check it out!

No double beds for me Sam 🙂

    Cheers!

p.s. Gav- well, you could always have room/bed to yourself- atleast you’d actually sleep then!

  9. I’m keen for this, although it falls into the birthday weekend of the other half – I’m going to have beg like a dog for this one. I’ll keep you posted.

  10. I don’t think I’ll manage the full weekend but I’m keen to go so I”l probably do the same as Iain – over Saturday morn at 7.00 and back at 19.20.

    Tom,

Have you had a chance to look into accomodation for this? Would be good to know if its likely to be a definate for this weekend or not?
Also, as I know how hard Arran is to find accomodation, so if any problems, what about considering another location with more choice? My suggestion is head up to Cairngorms as its been a couple of years since club went there…. and plenty of places to stay there.
    cheers,
    Sam

  12. I am keen for a trip away this weekend, or the one after. Arran would be great but also Cairngorms or Ballater. Happy to help find accommodation if need be,

  13. Apologies for slacking off on organising I’ve been away a fair but recently.

I’ve been trying to get in touch with the NTS who run the lodge and camping pods at Broddick Castle. They are hard to get through to on the phone, I’ll keep trying this week. Agree the Cairngorms would be a a great plan B. If I have no luck by tomorrow, then it would be great if you of Elizabeth could look into Cairngorms accomodation.
