Carron Valley trails closed (open again)

Just picked this up via Twitter, Carron Valley trails are currently closed due to fallen trees. No word yet on when they expect to have it cleared.

I assume there may be some down at Mugdock too.

EDIT: Carron Valley trails are open again. Hopefully the current storm won’t bring down more trees.

Killearn/Dumgoyne high loop – Sunday (20/11/11)

I’m planning to do the Killearn/Dumgoyne high loop this Sunday, leaving from the usual club car park at 9 a.m. Anyone fancy coming along?

Gerry’s brief description of the ride is:

Head out to Killearn via the Westie. Climb towards Dumgoyne from landrover track at Killearn and descend behind Dumgoyne to pipetrack. Return to car park, preferably via Bullands, allow ~4 1/2 hours for loop. Rocky/rooty etc. can be picked up at the start for those who are interested and we can regroup with others at Killearn ready for climb. Plenty of options and variety.

Weather forecast is looking reasonable at the moment, so might be some nice views over Loch Lomond.

Glen Tilt ride report

Sunday 24 July.

With a decent looking weather forecast in hand, it was the perfect opportunity to get a long ride in over in the Cairngorms. Ryszard, Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s friend Elsie and I (Grant) met in Blair Atholl to attempt the Glen Tilt route from Kenny “effin” Wilson’s book. Combined with general pre-ride faffage was the shock that I went to school with Elsie, some 130 miles away in Keswick. Conditions were excellent, trails were generally dry, weather was warm and there was a little breeze to stop things getting too sweaty.

The ride starts out with a road climb that gradually steepens before leveling out and providing lovely views over a loch. Off through a gate and it’s on to some double track for quite a while, most of the climbing at this point was pretty easy, although it was loose enough in places that you had to concentrate. As soon as the gradient pointed downwards there was plenty of fun to be had, again it was pretty loose but a good opportunity to get some speed up and leave the brakes alone.

Anyone fancy the Westy?

There’s a good chance I’ll be leaving Glasgow at the end of August, so I need to make as much of the location as possible between now and then. The logical mini-adventure ride that comes to mind is to take in some of the West Highland Way and I was wondering if anyone was up for it?

Two main possibilities:

  • Drive/train part of the way up and come back down, in a day.
  • Do the whole thing over 2/3 days.

So, who’s in (or even interested)? Might have to do a few away days as “training” too 🙂
