We’ve Got Prizes!!

The good people at the cycling & outdoor clothing company, Tenn Outdoors, have provided a selection of their Protean 10K waterproof baggies and one-size-fits-all snoods for the Mugdock SMBO this Sunday.  If you want a chance to win some of these (and hopefully have a great ride and enjoy some tea, cake & banter afterwards) then you’ll need to get your name down for the event!

Mugdock SMBO 2016 – Call for volunteers

As some of you may already know GMBC are hosting a round of the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering series on 2nd of October. A few of us from the committee are undertaking the main organising duties but we are looking for some volunteers from the club both on the day and help with planning in the run up to the event.

We will be looking for help with checkpoint placing and collection, placing signage, checking riders in/out at the hall along with other tasks.

If anyone is interested in helping out then post up or get in touch.

We will hopefully have full details available and entries open by the end of the week.

SMBO Autumn Series: Abernethy DARE

NB: Date change:  SMBO website originally said it was 12th Oct – it’s now 11th October!!

Event sign up and details here:

D.A.R.E you ride solo ? or will you Double D.A.R.E and ride as a Pair!

Take on the undulating terrain of the Abernethy area in a whole new way. Race from control to control finding new routes and uncovering fast flowing trails, short steep climbs, long descents and lung busting ascents.. the difference is you choose the route!

Its not just about fitness, being a great rider or owning the best kit. It’s about choosing a good route and pacing yourself over the 3 hours so that you get back on time having collected as many points without any penalties!

This is a brand new area with a great mixture of trails and tracks. We have specifically chosen this area due to the volume of interconnecting farm tracks and lanes to help you get around. This will also help if there is a lot of rain as we will have less issues with areas becoming un-rideable due to weather!

If your concerned about navigation, don’t worry, the control points are all on marked routes and you just need to follow path to junction collect control points, check map, go left / right to next identifiable feature/ junction and carry on working your way round as though you were just out exploring new trails for yourself!

There is no need to be taking bearings or other complicated navigational techniques. The reason to have a compass is to help you with some Control Point clues like “Post to North of bridge.” and if your in a wood and cant see other features, you can get a sense of direction!

As part of the adventurous side of the event there is one special feature control point on the course which will require a basic torch to be carried! Don’t want to give too much away he he..! It will only be for a short time so expensive bike lights are not required whatsoever.

Don’t worry ! the rest of the controls will be clearly visible from the marked paths on the map and at clearly identifiable landmarks, objects or junctions.

It will be Mid October so expect and prepare for all 4 seasons!

Abernethy SMBO Event: Saturday 11th Oct

Hi.  It’s the Abernethy round of the MTB orienteering series this coming Saturday.  If you’ve not done one of these before it’s a great 3 hours out on the bike and as competitive as you want to make it.  Basically you’re given a map and checkpoints and have 3 hours to get around as many of them as possible.  Map reading skills help, as does a degree of fitness – and if you have neither it doesn’t matter.

So, who’s up for it?  So far the following folks have either signed up or are interested in doing it:  Thomas Wylie, Ryszard, Mario, Katie, Angus, maybe Aileen and myself.  If you want to do it then decide quickly because the online entry closes on the 9th of October.  It may be possible to sign up on the day but to be sure get it booked ASAP online.

You can sign up at Entry Central and read more about it on the BMBO page.  If you’re going then either post up here or shout up on FB to arrange logistics.

SMBO 12th April 2014

As mentioned at the AGM, we’re pleased to announce that GMBC will be hosting the 1st round of the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering Spring League on Saturday 12th April. We are hosting this event for a second year, and it’s shaping up to be a great event with the new club facilities at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club playing host.
If you are unfamiliar with MTB orienteering (formerly known as Trailquest) the objective is to visit as many of the 30 checkpoints as possible within the 3 hour time limit.  Continue reading

SMBO Abernethy Sat 16th Novemeber

Ieva already posted this up, but I thought I’d see if anyone else was interested.

http://theabernethydare.blogspot.co.uk/

I’ll be driving up if any one wants to head up with me, circa 10am start (in Abernethy), 3 hours orienteering and maybe a spin for a hour or two afterwards.

I’ve entered as a solo, but if anyone wants to pair up is daft enough to spend an extra three hours getting lost and listening to my slevers and pish  I’m sure that could be arranged with the organisers.

Weather looking decent!
