Proper summer rides – Shindig Route and Cairngorm Loop

I’ve put up two events in the calendar, both of which are 200km/1 day mtb affairs:

http://www.gmbc.org.uk/event/summer-big-ride-1-cairngorm-loop-reprise-but-this-time-a-little-bit-shorter/

http://www.gmbc.org.uk/event/summer-big-ride-2-milngavie-lochearnhead-and-back/

It will be the mountain bike equivalent of this

Looking for a team of 5 max to keep it quick.  If you’re interested post up on the event page.

I know it’s the middle of winter… but any interest in a big summer ride?

In the interests of keeping spirits up during the dreachness of mid-winter I’ve been thinking about summer.

Anyone interest in this?

Shindig route

Milngavie>Westie to Inversnaid>Aberfoyle>Calander>Glen Ample>Calander>Aberfoyle>Strathblane>Milngavie

200km (125 miles) mostly off-road. The route was set by Bryan Dawson for Shand Cycles ‘Shindig’ bike packing over-nighter.

Planning on doing it in a day, perhaps on CX bike  – possibly second weekend in June or last weekend in July. Likely a 6am start and a midnight finish. All TBC

It’s obviously going to be hard work, but at least there’s plenty of time to get the miles in!

Cairngorm Loop Ride Report

This ride was the last thing I wanted to tick off for the year after the 400 and 600km Audaxs and a decent performances (by my standards) at 10 under and GT7 – all of which were filed under the ‘might not get another chance for 20 years’ category.  Before we start, here’s a warning.  This is both long and boring.  If you can’t be bothered reading much, then here’s the ride in numbers:

0: Number of punctures

1: Number of riders

1: Number of randy trackpumps

1.30: Hours/minutes of dry feet

4: number of OS maps required

5: Number of repeats of Rough Trade Shops Indiepop 09

6: Number Pop-tarts eaten

15: KM of hike-a-bike

18.16: Hours/minutes riding time

24.01: Hours/minutes total ‘on bike’ time

289.3: Total km for weekend

4000: Number of midgie bites received in Glen Feshie

Anyway, my Cairngorm Loop weekend ride was massively popular with a total of two people (Tom and Luke – no surprises there) expressing any kind of interest but neither able to make it.

So I just went on my own.  Nevermind, two whole days of peace and quiet is something of a treat these days. (update 04/09: two days!? two minutes is a luxury now…)   The planned route followed this (more or less) http://www.cairngormsloop.net/map.html with a planned stop at a B&B in Aviemore. 101 miles on day one, 85 on day two.  An early start required meant I would travel up to Blair Atholl and Friday, sleep in the car, and ride off first thing on Saturday morning. Mid-week mini-adventure: Glentress (Thur 17th)

Glenn Luss, Cobbler, and now Glentress.  Don’t say GMBC doesn’t set you up with some cool-as-the-other-side-of-the-pillow midweek rides.

A few people on the intro rides, and on the Facebook, have asked about trail centre rides – so here you go. Plus, a Thursday evening makes a midweek evening into a sort of weekend day like some sort of magic.

Afterwards we can go and eat chips.

Here’s the link:  http://www.gmbc.org.uk/event/midweek-mini-adventure-3-glentress-evening-ride/

Cairngorm Loop Big Weekend 26th-27th July

I’ve put the following event into the calendar:  http://www.gmbc.org.uk/event/cairngorm-loop-weekend-provisional/

As some of you know, impending fatherhood means I have a lot of long rides to get out of my system before my riding is reduced to an hour or two early morning blast, commuting, CX racing and stolen minutes on the turbo (joy).  So far this has mainly consisted of riding around in small circles with number board attached and endlessly long road rides.

So I thought it might be time for something different and something big.  Might be the last chance I get for some time.  So hows about this:

300km over two days, around the Cairngorms.  B&B/bunkhouse at Aviemore or Braemar.  Route based on this event: http://www.cairngormsloop.net/  Here’s a tread on Singletrack with some nice pictures:  http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/a-cairngorm-loop

C’mon, you know you want to.  It will be epic.
