3rd January – Fairlie moor?

Anyone fancy something different yet reasonably local?.

There is a few options for start and end point riding the moors, I’d suggest starting at Dalry railway station, which can be reached from Glasgow by train, or about 40 mins from the city centre down the A737 by car.

This way gives a nice warm up on back roads up onto the moor road, where there are a few options which all result in really good descents, the best of which being the descent from Kaim hill at around 1100 feet, down to sea level by means of techy moorland, swoopy rooty woods and finishing with a cracker down Fairlie glen.

We could either then carry on into Largs and try the DH track, head to the pub in Fairlie for a few sociable real ales, or climb back up the moor road (killer road climb) and over a lovely descent into West Kilbride. All the end point options have railway stations which tie in with Dalry and Glasgow, so if anyone does fancy a beer or two, there is no need to drive, as there is no problem getting lots of bikes on the train.

We can ride for anything from 2-5 hours, depending on the route, and the weather. If it’s a clear day, the views are superb.

  1. I’ve always wondered what the biking was like around there, shame I’m away that weekend otherwise I’d be keen. Hope you get a few folk.

  2. Greg – would love to do this as per the stw thread. Unfortunately 3rd is back to work day for me 🙁

  3. Greg – this is a possible for me, I’m off all that week. Hopefully the rain will die down by then and the tracks will dry out a bit. I’ll check back later, weather and fitness willing : ]

  4. Sorry iain, mrs B is working 1st and 2nd. Get a holiday in!. Steve, fairlie doesn’t really get too muddy, it’ll be wet, but not boggy. Because its pretty steep, the water drains off not too bad.

    • Hi G – the fcast for Thurs looks reasonable although I’m not so sure about my fitness. I would prefer to drive to the start/end point rather than use the train. Is there a loop option from Dalry? Steve

  5. Hi Greig, would love to join you for this but sadly I’m back to work that day. However, I’ve emailed you to pass on details for Dan Frazer who wants to join for that ride. Hope it’s a good ride, need a report posted afterwards!

  6. Greg – would love to see these trails, so maybe another time – or if 3rd is manky could do on Sun 6th ????

  7. Iain, no probs, I can make the 6th as well, as long as it’s no too early, I start back nightshift that night!.

  8. Hi Greg – this looks interesting. Am back to work on the 3rd, but could do Wed 2nd. If not it would be good to do this another time as I stay in Paisley, so this would be quite a convenient location.

    Cheers – Nigel

  9. Sorry, Baja, 2nds a no go for me. How about the 6th? Ian was maybe be coming that day?. I’m planning on riding the 3rd and the 6th.

    Greg.

  10. I’m still up for doing this on Sunday. Will plan to drive to dalry. Hope it dries up a bit 🙂

  11. Steve, there is no loop from Dalry, would need to be a west Kilbride or fairlie start, prob west Kilbride. If that’s ok with Dan Frazer, who is also coming, but hasn’t got his account sorted yet, then I’m fine with that. Dan, drop me an email.

Iain, I’ll see you on Sunday, hopefully Nigel will make it as well. There’ll be a couple of my riding buddies on both days.

And steve, nae worries about fitness, there’s a bit of hike a bike to keep everyone honest!.

What time suits everyone for the 3rd and the 6th? 10am sociable enough? Means we’ll be done by 2.

    Greg.

    • Hi Greg, I’ve looked at the train map and the Fairlie and W Kilbride stations seem to be on the same track as Dalry so regardless of your preferred start point I should be able to leave my car at the station and get a train back to that station – does that make sense?

10 is fine for me on Thurs. What starting point suits you guys best?

  12. Yip, they’re all on the Largs – Glasgow line. I’m easy, it depends what dan wants to do. Dalry is a slightly shorter drive for you, by about 5 minutes.

What about 9.30 at Dalry? I can get a train from prestwick at 9.10 direct, does that suit? If so, we’ ll go with that unless dan says otherwise?.

    See ye then.

  13. so how was the Fairlie ride ? is there still a plan to repeat on Sunday ? I’d be up for it, or it it’s better delaying till ground is dryer I might wander east towards a Trail centre.

  14. Was good, obviously wet, but good fun!. Only myself, Steve and Craig were riding, there are a few more of us on Sunday. Up to you, Iain, I’ll be riding there anyway. Planning on riding from Dalry railway station at 10am.

  15. Cheers Greg – I would like to see the route, so will aim to be there for 10. Do we ride back to Dalry, or is it a down the hill and train back – not quite sure from earlier posts ?

  16. Will be in Dunblane this sunday so can’t make it this time, but seeing has how this is relatively close to me I will hopefully do it next time. Cheers – Nigel

  17. Iain, we will probably get the train back from west Kilbride to Dalry, takes 10 mins, via the delights of the 3 toons n Kilwinning!

  18. Awesome ride Greg, really enjoyed and nice to see some different trails. Definitely up for doing that again, cheers.

  19. Cheers Iain, was a good ride, and finding a new descent made it even better. Good to meet you as well.

    Greg.
