Heads up for the students & cost conscious

Hello all,

Currently there’s a sale on at Alpine Bikes.  Notable offers include 50% off Fox clothing and heavily reduced Bontrager Clothing.  Some Kryptonite D Locks for £25 (I bought one, normally £45 & comes with 4 foot cable).  Sales includes Gore, Endura & Altura gear.  There’s also discounts on branded helmets and Shimano / Bonty shoes.

I also found this link on Bikeradar today, it’s a heads up to the next Aldi bike bumf sell off!

http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/aldi-cycling-clothing-and-accessories-first-look-31667

I’ve bought a lot of their bits & bops over the last few years.  I can vouch for their clothing, especially the merino tops, jerseys, socks & gloves.  The light sets are generally basic/bulky and purely for commuting.  The locks are pants along with the track pumps (if there are any this time).   The pannier racks & bike stands are very good value.

Each shop only gets allocated a small amount of stock for each product and the sell out very quickly.  So best to get there on the day of release and as early as possible.

Cheers

Another Weekend Away Trip – Lake District – End of Oct

Hello peeps,

Another Weekend Away Ride! We haven’t had any all year, and now four come along at once!

If you are keen to join us, four of us are heading to Keswick on Friday 28th Oct to Sun 30th Oct.  I’m tackling Whinlatter Forest Park and the Altura Trails, but if anyone has any ride suggestions, please feel free to post a comment.

Accommodation is at Denton House Bunkhouse – it’s £15 per night, tea/coffee, linen included but they recommend bringing a duvet/sleeping bag.  It’s in Keswick & the trails are a close drive away.

I’m booking the bunkhouse on Monday so we don’t miss out, so if you’re keen, please let me know before then.

Cheers

Club Weekend Away Rides – Any interest??

Hi all,

Not meaning to state the obvious or tread on anyones toes, but just to recap – there are two weekend away rides planned on the calendar, with the addition of Dawns early November away ride.

Firstly, the September weekend of 23rd – 26th, there’s the Pitlochry/Ballater/Braemar ride.  The location is up for discussion, so please feel free to comment.

Secondly, the last weekend of November 26th – 27th, we have the Dalbeattie/Mabie/Ae Weekender.

Finally, we have Dawn organising a weekend away in early November, weekend of the 4th -6th.  See post  http://glasgowmbc.wordpress.com/2011/09/12/long-weekend-in-aviemore/

An early show of hands from anyone interested in these away rides will allow us to organise accommodation.  It’s already getting difficult to find places, the longer we leave will result in not finding anywhere to stay.

Thanks again

Interim Club Clothing Order – Update

Hello folks,

We are almost there with the number of tops.  I have 12 confirmed, 5 have yet to choose sizes and the club will order 6 spare tops.

I have emailed CycleJersey to confirm a couple of things and will come back to you with confirmation shortly.  If all goes well, I hope to place the order before the end of this week.

Just to confirm the following incase I’ve made a mistake, I have the following orders confirmed (mainly from WordPress & a few by email):

Bradley VB – Large L/S FR, Eilidh – Small S/S XC, Callum Smith – Large S/S FR, David Duns – Medium S/S XC, Elizabeth – Small L/S XC, Steven M70 – Medium L/S FR, Euan Boyd – Large S/S XC, Grant – XLarge L/S FR, Iain Ferguson – 2 x Large S/S FR, Gerry Cleary – XLarge S/S XC.

Still to confirm sizes: Stephen Malaney – Large S/S XC??, Jack/Captainscrumpy – S/S XC??, Elaineandg – Large or XLarge S/S FR??, Paivi – 1 x S/S XC & 1 x L/S XC??.

For the folk that have confirmed  – only leave a reply if I have your size/top choice incorrect.

For the folk that haven’t confirmed sizes yet – please do so within the next few days.  Leave a reply and see if anyone can help you by trying on their tops.  Or go to the website http://www.thecyclejersey.com/shop/.  If buying an XC top, click on the cycle jerseys Categorie and select any jersey, then select the ‘Jersey Size’ drop down – this gives you recommended chest sizes in inches.  For Freeride, go back to the home page, and select Freeride Jerseys in the Categories and do the same as above.

5 Ferries Update – Trains now unavailable!

Hello all,

I spoke with the Duty Manager of Scotrail Central station this morning.  He’s informed me that the Ardrossan line train from Central isn’t running for the next 4 weeks due to maintenance and that the return trains from Weymss Bay are generally busy with commuters (I did notice that last year).  Due to this, he stated that we’d probably be refused onto the trains as there won’t be enough space for passengers & bikes.

So, for the folk that still want to attend the ride, we need to drive & car share.  There are two options for this; Continue reading

Interim Club Top Clothing Order (Not Anniversary Top!)

Hello all,

Due to interest from various members, I have contacted thecyclejersey.com about replicating the order from last year and using the same design.  There are two types of tops available, along with a Wind Cheeta jacket (looks similar to a Gore Phantom type jacklet without zip off sleeves).

Once we’ve placed the order, the turnaround is 3 to 4 weeks.  The cost varies depending on the size of order and we get a special rate from them.  Basically, if the order is for 20 or more tops the following prices apply:

XC Short Sleeve £30, XC Long Sleeve £32.40, Freeride Short Sleeve £30, Freeride Long Sleeve £32.40 & Wind Cheeta Jacket £55.20.

The XC top is basically a roadie style top with 3 pockets at the rear.  This is a tighter fitting top, I have a Large, and I’m only a 36 inch chest.   The Freeride top is similar to what the downhillers wear and is more of a relaxed fit.  I’m sure it’s a v-neck too.  I can not comment on the Wind Cheeta – never seen one.

To gauge sizes, I recommend checking out their website at http://www.thecyclejersey.com/tcj-custom-jerseys.htm or asking fellow members nicely if you could try on one of their tops.

So, it’s down to you!  We need an idea of numbers to proceed.  So, please let me know your name, top choice (your can order as many as you want) and size.  If the order falls under 20, the price takes a sharp increase starting at £38.  I’ll be buying another xc top, so only 19 to go an we get the cheaper rates.

Please let me know asap.

Cheers

Beginner Rides & Other Information

Hello peeps, (sorry for the length of this)

We’ve been running the Beginner Rides successfully every Wednesday since the start of May.  Unfortunately, it was always seen as temporary rides during the warmer, lighter months.  So, our last beginner ride of the season will be Wednesday 31st of Aug.  We will start them again next year around April/May.  It’s mainly due to the nights getting noticeably darker and the majority of riders without lights.

I’d like to say a big thanks to all the folk who have helped out with leading, and to the everyone who’s been attending.  There are a couple of options, I recommend that the riders try attending a Tuesday or Sunday ride.  A few of you have already and it’s a great way to meet other club members and improve on fitness & skill.  Over the last several weeks, the Tuesday ride has seen numbers of 12 – 20 riders, so on the odd occasion, we’ve been splitting the ride to accommodate pace & size.  (lights will be needed by riders attending).   The Sunday ride, (in my opinion), is a bit more of a sedate pace but can be a longer ride, with a coffee stop thrown in mid way or at the end.  And as it’s an early start of 9am, there is no need for lights.

A number of folk have been asking for club tops.  It has been decided that due to it being our 25th anniversary next year, we are going to be creating unique limited-run retro club tops.  We’d like to be rolling these out around the beginning of the year and the aim is to subsidise part of it to paid club members.  (Further information will follow in September).  Due a number of factors and issues involved in organising this, we decided not to duplicate an order from last year.  Although, due to the initial enquiries, I have emailed our last supplier asking how long an interim order would take to create using the crackin’ design from last season. (hint hint Stephen…….more designs needed).  So, I’m waiting on a reply and I’ll post again soon.

Lastly, we need some volunteers for the next few weeks (this is addressed to the committee too) to lead the Beginner Rides.  I’m down for tomorrow, but I have no wingman and due to our next committee meeting falling on the last Beginner Ride of the season (Wed 31st Aug),  we need 2 club members help to lead the final ride.

And finally finally, remember that the club nite oot is on Friday 26th of August at Big Blue on Great Western Road.  And I’ll be out tonight from 6pm at the club car park if anyone fancies a ride before the 7pm start time.

Cheers

Barry

Club Social Night – Friday 26th of August

Hi all,

It’s been a while since we had our monthly Club Social Night.  So, it’s been arranged for the last Friday of this month.  We’re meeting from 7pm and the venue is The Big Blue, on Great Western Road at Kelvinbridge (other end of the bridge from the underground station).

It’s a chance to get all the club members mingling with folk from the different ride nights,  along with our new members attending the Wednesday Beginner Rides.  It’s a great chance to swap stories, compare scars and a hangover is normally guaranteed.

It’s a casual night, absolutely no cycling tops and if you turn up in lycra, I’m afraid your buying a round for everyone;-)

There’s good grub available at very reasonable prices and the beer isn’t watered down.  Link to the menu here http://www.bigbluerestaurant.co.uk/lunch-menu

And after we’ve drank the bar dry, there’s usually a hardcore group always up for a boogie.

I’ll be there and I hope to see you too.

Cheers
