GMBC Social Events – Dates For Your Calendar

Hi.  There’s been some chat and it turns out that people seem to like socialising almost as much as riding bikes so here’s a couple of dates so you can plan ahead……

Friday 30th SeptemberPub Trip – location TBC.  Same as always – decide on which pub to meet in, then play a game of “guess the clubmate’s name because you don’t recognise them without a bike and crash helmet”.

Saturday 10th DecemberChristmas Night Out – Siempre Bicycle Cafe – menu and sign up form will come out in due course.

Glasgow Mountain Bike Orienteering 2016

Come join us on October 2nd for something a bit different – mountain bike orienteering! Part of a series of events in the 2016 SMBO calendar (http://www.smbo.org.uk/2016-events/), this is a really fun day out. We put out a bunch of checkpoints in the woods of Mugdock Country Park and the surrounding areas; you start at the sports club and go to find as many of them as you can in three hours. Simple? Well there’s no defined route – that’s up to you, so kind of!

We’ve run the same event a couple of times before and it’s always been a great success. The event is open to adults and children over the age of 15 (or over the age of 12 as part of a “generations” team). You can enter as a solo or a pair; we’ll give you a map showing the checkpoints and a dibber to check in at each checkpoint and undoubtedly some cake at the end… We have aimed to make the course fun for all, from first timers to experienced mountain bikers with lots of easily reachable checkpoints, along with some further afield for those looking for a challenge.

All entrants must be a full or day-rider member of the BMBO – day rider membership is free. All the details at: http://www.bmbo.org.uk/membership-information/

The event is now available to enter via the BMBO page here: http://www.smbo.org.uk/mugdock-2016/.

Prices to enter the event are as follows:

Solo: £15

Pairs: £25

Youth: £5

Generation Pair (adult/youth): £20

We want to see as many of you enjoying the event as possible but if you would prefer to help out we will need a couple of volunteers to help out on the day. Tasks include setting out & retrieving checkpoints & signage, directing people to Sign On and start points, a small amount of car park attendance (until event starts), course “marshalling” (marshalling is not official or static but it would be good to have a few folks to ride around the course area during the event to keep an eye out for any problems).

If you have any questions about the event or if you can volunteer then please post below, on the GMBC facebook page, contact info@gmbc.org.uk or speak to Graham, Angus, Will or Andrew S.

Heads Up: This Week’s Intro Ride

Hi.  From emails to the club it looks like we might have 5-6 new riders joining us for the Intro ride this week, which is great.  Can I ask a favour from any regular GMBC Intro riders who might be coming along this week – please can you charge up and bring any spare bike lights you may have?  It’s just in case we get a good turn out and finish at dusk.  Regarding the route & the pace for Wednesday, we’ll manage it so that everyone gets a ride they enjoy.

Right, I’d best go and buy some more biscuits then 😉

Reminder: Saturday & Sunday Rides

Saturday – Angus Glens ride, 35km, 1100+ metres ascent, big hills, big views.  Chris McD, Nick and myself are going – any other takers?  If so, departing Glen Clova Hotel 09:30.  I think Chris still has space for 1 or 2 passengers if you’re interested.

Sunday – Local Ride (Kilpatricks), easy pace, nothing too technical, cafe stop and lots of chat – 6 or 7 folks have been in touch to say they’re up for it.  10:30am start, 3/3:30pm finish.

Sunday – Away Ride (Ardgarten Loop) with Iain, gravel ride, departing Ardgarten car park 09:30, midday finish.  See GMBC Facebook group for details.

A Weekend Of Riding

13-14th August

  • Option 2: Sat 13th Aug –  “A Big Day Out” – location TBC but, if the weather permits, it’ll be somewhere remote with big mountains and hike-a-bike. #staunch
  • Option 3: Sun 14th AugLocal Ride – a journey to the centre of the Kilpatricks.  Nothing techy planned, just a pleasant ride.  Route/distance will depend on the weather.  This ride is aimed at new riders/riders new to the club as I’ve seen a few requests for weekend rides recently.  The focus is definitely on social & friendly and doing some exploring – if that wasn’t enough enticement I’m bribing you with a cafe stop too!!  🙂

Post up on the website or on FB to say if you’re coming.

Summer Ride Wishlist

So, while “summer” is here, where do you want to ride?  Epic or easy, local or remote, short or long distance – it’s all good.  Post up your ride suggestions here on gmbc.org.uk or on Facebook.  Get your ideas up and let’s see who else is up for some rides.  Here’s my top 3 wishlist:

  1. Lochnagar Loop
  2. Glen Clova/Mayar/Kilbo Path
  3. Glen Tilt
Lochnagar (+ hire bike)

Tonight’s Intro Ride – Carron Valley

Just a quick reminder that there’s an Intro ride taking place up at Carron Valley tonight.  Given the showers today hopefully the trails will be better drained at Carron Valley.  From previous chats there were 3 people up for this excursion.  If anyone else is up for it please email info[AT]gmbc[DOT]org[DOT]uk or drop me a text.  If you can’t make Carron Valley then there is still the regular 7pm ride from the hall.

In the meantime, enjoy this photo from a sunny & dry ride last night:
