Trail Maintenance: This Saturday (27-Feb)

The next trail maintenance session is planned for this coming Saturday.

Here’s some comments from the park ranger on our efforts at previous session

The work you all did on the WHW is brilliant.   The new joined up ditch is running really well and I’ve had several very positive comments on the improved path surface so thank you all very much.

Thanks to the following folks for signing up for this Saturday: Pete, Ryszard, Jeremy, IainC, TonyR, Ian Godber, Julie & Bosco.  We could use a couple more people so if you’re free, even for a few hours then pop your name down on the form and join in.

At the moment, the plan for Saturday is to do some work on Riverside.  I’ll email around folks who have signed up to confirm the details.  Hope to see you there.

Dunkeld Gnarrdventure

Angus, RichHB, Elizabeth, Euan and myself headed up to Dunkeld in search of the various enduro trails.  Armed with vague knowledge from previous events, Strava and GoPro “edits” we headed into the hills behind Dunkeld and started to piece together the different routes.

Sunday Away Ride – Dunkeld

Keeping an eye on the weather for a potential away ride on Sunday.  Probably a “red” level of ability with sections of black.  It won’t be a trail centre.  I’ll post up here once a location & route have been decided.

Updated 6pm 20/2:

Meet at the Birnam Arts Centre, Station Rd, Birnam, 10am.  Plan is to piece together some local trails, warning – this will involve “map faff”, dress warmly, forecast is for wintery showers.

There’s No Business Like Snow-business

Grab bikes, pack gear, drive to Pitlochry, ride a circular loop in the nearby hills.  Sounds easy?  It wasn’t.  Good scenery though?  You bet!  Lots of fun?  Absolutely.  1300m of climbing over 34km looked a bit like this:

Sunday Ride – Pitlochry?

Hi.  I’m thinking about a 40km cross-country loop near Pitlochry on Sunday if the weather looks good.  It’s mainly fireroad with a decent piece of singletrack/moorland descent on part of the route.  The route has good views from the high point but could have some lying snow so I’ll need to check that won’t make the route impassable.  If you’re interested then post up here or text me.

Membership Subs 2016

Folks, the new membership sign up tool (via WebCollect) is now ready for you to use.  It allows you to  “buy” your 2016 club membership and to maintain your membership details.  As agreed at the 2015 AGM, we’re keeping the subs the same for 2016, i.e.

  • £15 for new members & non-Glasgow residents
  • £25 for returning members

Instructions for renewing your subs via WebCollect can be found on our Membership Application page.  Your details will be shared with our sponsors, Dales Cycles, so you can benefit from the discount on bikes, components and labour at the shop.  Other membership benefits include:

  • use of club facilities; bike wash & post-ride refreshments on mid-week rides
  • discounted accommodation at over 260 (S)YHA hostels in the UK
  • subsidised training courses (eg. first aid & navigation skills)
  • open invitation to join other club members for weekends away
  • club social events; summer BBQ, Christmas night out, social rides

If you have any questions about the subs process then please contact membership[AT]gmbc[DOT]org[DOT]uk

We’re looking forward to seeing you (back) at the club in 2016 and getting out on some great rides during the year.

Path Maintenance Sign Ups

We all enjoy the riding that Mugdock Park has to offer.  So now it’s your chance to put something back in to the park with some good, honest graft to help maintain the paths.

The dates for path maintenance in Mugdock Park have now been agreed with the park ranger and are as follows – all dates are Saturdays and sessions will be from 10am to 2/3pm (you’re welcome to sign up for part of a day too).

If you’re interested in helping out then please sign up via the link below.  The form also contains an idea of the sort of work involved.  Feel free to share this with any friends who may be interested:

GMBC 2016 – Latest Goings On

Hi folks, a quick update for some things that are going on or about to happen at the club:

Subs 2016 – we’re putting the final touches to a new sign up tool, it’ll also mean we can organise trips through it (thanks to Will for setting this up!).  Watch this space.

Weekends awayChrisJ’s bothy trip is next weekend, the Balmaha trip is pretty much organised (thanks Gary!), the Easter trip to the Yorkshire Dales is getting booked.  If there’s a trip you want to see happen then ask how the committee can help you (club funds to pay deposits on accommodation, for example).

Trail Maintenance – dates for the work days are coming soon (hoping for 2 in February & March and one in April).  Ryszard, Angus, Pete and myself have 1 more planning meeting with the park ranger to discuss what work needs doing.

Training courses – first aid and navigation skills were requested so there’s an action to work out what we can deliver to members.  More on this soon.

Club clothing – we’re looking into re-opening the Pactimo shop for club clothing.  I’d encourage anyone who is still to receive their 2015 top or their £10 discount to contact Stuart or Will respectively to arrange that.

Club facilities – we’ve asked the sports club if we can get use of the squash court areas for training courses and turbo training sessions for nights where it’s just too miserable for a real bike ride.  We’re also investigating making use of the courtyard space at the hall for a new dedicated bike wash.

Association with Dales – we’re planning a catch up with our sponsors, Dales Cycles, so if you have any ideas of what they can do for us and what we can do for them then shout up.

Events, events, events – cross country, orienteering, endurance, enduro, maybe even a hilly time trial.  There’s no shortage of organised events in the mountain biking calendar so if you’ve always fancied entering one and need some moral support why not ask around at the club to see who else is going?

Social media – we’ve added a Strava widget to the website and will be working on better integrating Facebook & WordPress so that it’s easier to share and see information on whichever platform you prefer.

Club Calendar 2017 – there’s a lot of great club rides throughout the year and some amazing photos that come out of them.  If you take a great photo on a club ride during the year, or you have one from a previous year, then keep it safe and towards autumn we’ll be looking for your best photos to compile into the GMBC 2017 (30th anniversary!!!) calendar.

If there’s anything else you want an update on then just ask or drop an email to me.

Basque MTB Trip: Summer 2016

Are you interested in getting away for some sunshine and stunning, technical riding this summer?  Well, I’ve been in touch with Doug at Basque MTB, he has a few spaces left for 11-18th June and he’ll be able to host GMBC riders who are riding at an intermediate to advanced level.  So far myself, Will and a mate of his are going.

Here’s the blurb from Doug about the Basque Coast:

“Put simply this part of Spain has everything we need with the Pyrenees, the Basque culture, and Spain’s stunning coastline. The mountain biking is very varied, from big mountain trails in the Pyrenees to stunning singletrack along the Spanish coast, each day we will choose something special to suit you.”

Accommodation is at a lovely B&B in Hondarribia, just above the town, with a pool and a short walk to excellent bars and restaurants.  A week with BasqueMTB is €750 (approx £590).

GMBC Easter 2016 Trip – Yorkshire Dales

Greetings all ye Crackpots, Slackbottoms and Shitingthorpes in the atlas of funny Yorkshire place names that is GMBC!

After some discussion we’re planning our 2016 Easter trip to the Yorkshire Dales (what about the Lakes? Probably too busy for large group rides.  What about the Cairngorms?  Good but we’ve been there the last few years.  OK, Torridon then?  Too far & not enough easier rides).

The dates are Thu 24th to Mon 28th March.
