Summer Alps Tour 2013

AlpsRoutes

Myself, Ali and Al arrived at Chalet la Combe in Morzine to be met with a startled owner who was clearly not expecting us. What was worse, the stack of cases in the lounge looked as though other guests had just arrived in front of us. Luckily it turned out that the cases were the owner’s and Jan was a fantastic cook and host. http://www.bedbreakfastweb.com/host.cgi?id=506 As we didn’t bring a bleed kit with us, we were carrying all our gear for 2weeks in our 20L packs, it was off to a bike shop to sort out my rear brake. Turns out I wasn’t the only one off that flight in the queue with a defective brake.

GMBC Strikes Back (An Ochil Hills Ride Report)

So.  The Ochils.  It’s a GMBC “classic ride” (before my time).  It’s one that long-term club members (OK, Pete Morgan at least) talk about and get all misty eyed with tales of big climbs, great views and steep descents.  First, some history; last year Elizabeth, Jack, Dawn and myself decided to have a go at it.  We attempted it on a muggy, humid day where the tops of the Ochils were obscured by mist/fog/cloud and a hasty descent veering away from a fenceline saw us hopelessly lost and we spent about 2.5 – 3hours tramping about in the bog and moors before giving up and returning to Tillicoultry.  Ochils 1  : GMBC nil.  When Elizabeth suggested a re-match I was up for it.  What would happen this time?? I cannot access flickr at work so uploading pictures here. I tried to track our Saturday route on the map and I believe it was about 40k, the ascent between a few lowest and highest points was 750 m.

Thanks for everyone who came, great rides and great company. Now you know the hidden gem. We should definitely do another weekend. We have too many good options around here.

Another Top Tuesday Ride

It was good to see a few folk out tonight, we managed a good sized loop up over Windy Hill and back through the trails at the back of Baljaffray. Not everyone had ridden over this way before so it made a nice change from Mugdock. Things were still riding well up on Windy Hill, and there were some crazy cloud formations over Glasgow that threatened a deluge. Despite the prophets of doom on Facebook, it stayed dry until we were safely under cover in the Burnbrae.

Ben Lomond

Top ride tonight on Ben Lomond. Six of us made the trek up in warm and humid conditions. After much perspiration it was time to turn around and fly back down again. Really great conditions, yesterday’s showers had damped the dust down and the sun was out. There was even time for a quick pub stop at the end. Thanks to Chris, Graham, Graham, Elizabeth & Gareth.

Get Out and Ride

Despite the dismal forecast tonight turned out to be another dry ride on fast and fun trails. It was a nice change to have some dramatic clouds over the Campsies rather than the plain blue sky. Hope to see a few more folk out next week, or up Ben Lomond tomorrow weather permitting.
