Old Kilpatricks Carvery Ride on 21st January

Planning a Saturday ride in the Old Kilpatricks on 21st January. A few folk have already expressed an interest (Alison, Sam & John and Elizabeth). The plan is to meet at the Bowling Lock car park and be ready to ride at 10am (not at the big house as I suggested in a previous post). If you are travelling by train then there is a station at Old Kilpatrick which is handy. Also, Bowling Locks is connected to Glasgow, Balloch, Erskine Bridge via cycle tracks. It is not a hugely technical ride, but a few interesting optional offshoots at the top for anyone interested. There is a big climb, but perfectly do-able for anyone who is keen enough. Any faster climbers can repeat parts of the climb so we are never too far apart. The route is a loop which is always good and there is an optional post-ride refuel at the Crown Carvery/Pub. Please let me know if you are interested.

  1. sounds good old stomping ground of mine hope to make it if not wallpapering.

  2. Count me in for now. Don’t know if i’m working next weekend.

  3. I take it that from bowling it is out along cycle path or road(long draggy hill up)to path under bridge then up past the gas works past farm then on up loch humphrey road.if so i’ll catch or wait at gas works instead of back tracking from bowling.good wee route this i can go straight from house over brig.I’ll get phone number from someone to liase for mmet time at gas works if that is intened route. HOPEFULLY(weather here cack again) c u tuesday night i’ve got 5 prs of clear specs and 2 prs of dark. special blag from offshore for anyone who missed last trip home.

  4. Without meaning to sound overly thick, Bowling Locks? Is this just outside Glasgow?

I can’t seem to come up with anything meaningful via Google.

    • I’ll be there
Grant, try Bowling basin car park at the end of the forth & clyde canal, off the A82 and then along A814

      • Grant, another option from the West End is to ride out on Route 7 along canal path. You can pick it up from the Botanic Gardens. Watch out the jakeys and smashed glass though! Its not far, and reckon you’d get out to Bowling in about 30 minutes…
p.s. don’t be put off, been out lots on my own and its fine.

  5. don’t want to be a sh#% in the bed but the carvery might be very busy on Saturday. There is another option at the Milton inn beside garage.

  6. Gerry, looks like myself and Alex will be there. Don’t know the exact route you have in mind, but a really good option is to ride up the Milton Brae road and onto the forestry track which winds all the way to the western point of Loch Humphrey. From there its a nice wee ride over to Greenside Reservoir where you blast down the scree path onto Cochno Road, which spits you out at Hardgate for a short tarmac pedal to the carvery for lunch 🙂

Neil – we’ll probably just amble over from my house and go to the Locks carpark – for all the distance it is!

    See y’all there,

    Gav

  7. what was/is the intended route Gerry.

  8. Gav – was originally thinking about going up past the gas works and up the big landrover climb to the main reservoir. From there, I have always gone left to do a loop to bring me down past the big house which eventually spits you out at the carvery. I reckon your suggestion would involve going right, i.e. towards Hardgate. Always keen to find new routes, especially ones that could be linked to Mugdock. Time and weather permitting we could even do both.I was planning to go back to the car before the carvey, as I’m not keen on leaving the bikes in view outside.I know that is not ideal for anybody that rides over, but reckon we could work something out with cars etc. Alternatively, we could get the vegetarians to wait outside the carvery and watch the bikes…If anyone is super keen the carvery does a pre-ride breakfast option.

  9. Hi Gerry,

I know the route you mean really well, but it only takes 1 hour 15 minutes, that’s why I suggested the route above. This doesn’t go up the bee-hutch of a climb at the gas works, but a slightly easier road climb west of Bowling Locks. This version is maybe 2 hours or so long, and it’s a slightly nicer ride IMHO, if a little up-hill biased!

PS If there are any masochists out there, there’s a twin-loop ride where you can go up the killer hill at the gas works twice, once going west at the top and down to milton, then going east on the 2nd ascent and down to Hardgate, or linking to Milngavie. No takers? Didn’t think so…

  10. sorry guys, I’m not going to be here on saturday as I’m heading up to Aviemore but have fun, it sounds like a great wee loop.

  11. I’ll join you for this. It’s the first time I’ve been back to OK since my very first ride with the club. I remember it almost killed me, I quite fancy seeing how I fair this time 😛

I have a free space in the car from Glasgow if anyone wants a lift?

  12. Okay Grant, get you outside the Esquire House (Weatherspoons Pub) on Gt Western Road at Anniesland. I’ll pull into the carpark as it’s easier to load the car there. Be there for 9.20am.
