Part of the paisley peleton, kidding on to be a cyclocrosser as it is more socially acceptable than a roadie?... not enough much dirt, but way too much tarmac :-) my bike is often found outside coffee shops around renfrewshire or gleaming on the trails when it should be proper muddy!

Irvine cyclocross tomorrow – 2 October

Anyone else racing at Irvine? I plan to head down about 9.30 from Glasgow, may have family in tow to cheer or hurl abuse at me, although weather not looking great for a day standing at the beach, so could have to go without support! Should be a good race though, hope to see some GMBC jerseys there 🙂

things you see on the way home…

…Just cruising along my regular commute from Hamilton to Crookston, enjoying this fine weather, when passing Atlantic Quay who do I see just chilling out with his mates and doing some cool riding? it’s none other than Danny MacAskill, what a legend! It’s not every night you see an MTB hero in a Red Bull helmet just out riding in the town.

Put a smile on my face 🙂

PS. the bike day at riverside was amazing…anyone jump into the airbag? I wanted to do it but the wife was not too keen!

Cyclocross season starts 2nd October!

Further to Lyndsey’s email about the Mugdock cross race, it should be mentioned that the season starts on 2nd October at Irvine. Cyclocross is racing is brilliant, really cheap to enter, can be ridden on MTBs – even basic ones, and ‘only’ last an hour. The courses are short and great for spectating, seems to be a lot of families turn up and there is even a kids race too. I prefer this to big races like 10 under the ben as there is more atmosphere on the course and the odd cowbell to cheer you on, sometimes fun is to be had in the winter conditions… like riding what is essentially a road bike with slightly nobbly tyres in the snow! It would be great to see more GMBC riders out there – in fact some courses like Mugdock favour MTBers I rekon.

The events are well organised and all the info is up to date on the ‘cross website – http://www.scottishcyclocross.org.uk/

For sale – GMBC winter jersey and more

Having a clearout of outsize gear in great condition. I have an ‘impsport’ GMBC long sleeve thermal top in XL (roadie size so measures more like a large – fits about a 40-43 chest) it is great condition in the new design and only as a little bobbling from camelback straps. Cost me £50 I think, so sell for £20 ono.

Altura Kinetic waterproof – still in ‘as new’ condition – size large, more of an ‘MTB’ fit so looser – a proper size large. Grey with reflective bits and pit zips, really breathable and tough. Cost £60 but would accept £25 ono.

Also have some other outdoor gear – a North Face ‘flight’ long sleeve winter base/mid layer – ideal for walking, biking or skiing – zip neck, colour – silver/black. Size L (generous fit), only worn a couple of times – cost £40, accept £15.

Finally a North Face ‘synthetic’ insulated jacket – size L (generous too as it’s an american brand), olive green and black – really thick padding so ideal for sub zero conditions. Good condition, bought at NF factory sale ages ago, but not used very much as it has always been a bit big. Reckon it would be about £150 rrp, I paid a bit less so would sell for £30. Warm as down filling, but much easier to clean – a wee bit bulkier though so not as good as a belay jacket, ideal for when the snow comes! Has pockets for bottles inside too which is new 🙂

Can bring any of the above to a GMBC ride.

wanted – new style GMBC short sleeve – med or lrg

Hi folks, in the absence of a kit order this year I am looking to try get my hands on an xc (not freeride) style club top in the new design – either design is fine! size medium or large. If anyone has outgrown one and it’s in good condition then I will pay a fair price, or would be happy to swap a more expensive GMBC winter thermal long sleeve in XL (new design from impsport order) – very good condition but a little big for me.

cyclocross racing – questions

I know its a few months til the season starts but need to be prepared… first thing is a race licence to save a few quid on entries, what type do you need and any idea on cost? also, looking at getting some tyres – the schwalbe cx pros were good, maybe a little narrow for courses like mugdock – any other recommendations? (thinking hutchison bulldogs or maybe the new IRD crossfires in blinging white!)

heating engineer/plumber recommendations?

Got a wee problem with our heating and before I part with the price of a new bike to British Gas to get our system powerflushed, anyone else has this done and used a repuatable and cheaper heating company? It needs done ASAP though.

PS. contacted Simon Cousins already – hopefully to right email!

For sale: Rear 3 cycle carrier or swap for single roof carrier

Just bought some roof bars so looking to sell my Hollywood 3 bike rear cycle carrier, fits most cars, easy to adjust and 6 strap fitting s0 very secure. Holds 3 bikes, with good fittings on rack to keep bikes apart. Good condition, a few marks on it but not been used much at all. Cost £60 – sell for £25 or swap for a used, but descent quality alloy roof carrier to hold one bike, Thule or Mont Blanc (or similar) models preferred.

Thursday road ride?

Anyone thinking of a road ride, weather looks great. I am working a but later this week so takes a while to get home from Hamilton – could be up for another South Side Ride at about 7pm. If not, may be able to get train up to Milngavie. However would prefer to keep it ‘local’ (Crookston local that is!). Could do a wee singletrack road mega climb up back of the Glennifer braes (taking high road that follows Lugton route), then Uplawmoor, Dunlop and back via Neilston descent to Barrhead.

For Sale: Ridgeback AT2 child trailer

Looking to sell a 2 seater child trailer, fits all bikes (except horizontal drop outs on single speed – extra man points if you are able too!). It is in very good condition, just a few wee scuffs from squeezing through small gaps. This was the better model with alloy frame and wheels and is very light, folds flat too (was the lightest trailer for this price range). Takes 1 or 2 kids, has a 5 point harness and also a ‘boot’ for your shopping! Attaches to bike in seconds via a small mount that goes through rear Q/R. Very stable and easier to tow than you would think. This cost me £180, happy to sell for about £75 (better than hiring a few times!). Pass on to anyone interested, I am based at Crookston, but can drop off at hall or locally if required.
