Ciaran path, devil’s staircase ride

If anyone isn’t doing the first aid etc. and fancies a ride this Saturday (22nd April), I’m heading up to the King’s House Hotel to ride ciaran path via the devil’s staircase.

Good couple of options for mid- and post- ride refreshment, though be prepared for rocky technical trails (I’ll be taking pads) and obviously the usual weather.

Riding from 10.30 at King’s House.  Should be a good day out, the forecast is good!

Mountain Bike Orienteering “Glasgow Grit” 2017

Come join us on Sunday 21st May 2017 for a bit of mountain bike orienteering in and around Mugdock Country Park and surrounding areas!

Following on from the success of the 2016 event, Glasgow Mountain Bike Club are hosting round 3 of the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering Summer 2017 Series http://www.smbo.org.uk/mugdock-2017/, and promises to be a really fun day out.

Last year we hosted around 45 riders, where the age range spanned 50 years and everyone came back with a smile on their face so we will be aiming for more of the same. The course takes in woodland, moors and even a castle.  A mix of walkers’ paths, fire roads, some fun technical trails and hills mean the event is suitable for all abilities whether you just want to have fun or are looking for more of a challenge.

The event will be based at GMBC HQ at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club, with ample parking and toilet/changing facilities.  Registration will be open from 9am, and results and prize-winners announced from 2:30pm.  Using the marked-up maps provided, you start at the sports club and try and find as many checkpoints as you can in three hours.  There’s no defined route, and checkpoints vary in distance, location and points!  Tea, coffee, soup and cake will be available, and results and prize-winners will be announced at the sports club afterwards. Monday Mugdock?

Monday’s weather is looking a better bet than Tuesday’s so in the spirit of namby pamby, fair-weather cycling is anyone up for a quick spin around the usual suspects in Mugdock tomorrow (Mon 10/04)? I could do a 6.30 meet no problem but might not suit anyone else so can be flexible with the time. 7pm would be the latest though. Back home by 8.30. Any takers?

Last Weekend’s Path Maintenance

Following on from the work done on improving the drainage on the West Highland Way through Mugdock Wood the Park Ranger has been in touch with some positive feedback.  She said,

We had a couple of compliments from very pleased people on Monday about WHW and the fact there was no water running down it.

I’m sure it’s down to the quality of work rather than the recent dry spell 😉  Anyway a big high five to John Bennie, Neil MacNamara, Rob Sim, Andrew Dickson, Ian Godber and Luke Devereaux for doing the business last weekend.  I got some good before and after photos which I’ll post up soon.

MTB Fantasy League & First Aid Update

Hi there.  An update to the GMBC Fantasy MTBer League is due soon.  Which eligible club activities can you bag some points for?

For example, anyone on the trail maintenance gets points, have you taken a Strava KOM off Tom (Luke’s been busy!!), did you take part in John Bennie’s Ardgartan Loop – which I’m counting as one of the “Classic Rides” series.  Also, there will be bonus points for the riders who took part in the velodrome taster session organised by Iain.  There’s points up for grabs in the SMBO planned for 21-May (organisers, helpers, competitors and podiumers can all get points!!).

Here’s where to log your efforts – points will be allocated as per the scoring sheet, unless I’ve had a few beers in which case it’ll be quite random.

Log my efforts dammit!!

Also, there’s still 3 spaces left of the first aid course which members requested as club/rider development at previous year’s AGMs.  Bag your spot by emailing infoATgmbcDOTorgDOTuk.  If you can’t make it but know someone who can then please ask them to get in touch too as it would be a shame for the slots to go to waste.

30th Anniversary Jerseys Coming Soon…..

As most of you will be aware 2017 is Glasgow Mountain Bike Club’s 30th birthday. As we did for the 25th anniversary, there will the a 30th anniversary jersey to celebrate this.

We have been working on the new jerseys and enlisted the help of graphic design guru Mario Aquaro, who is currently putting the finishing touches to the design.

We will be using Pactimo as the supplier as we did in 2015 and purchases will be through their web shop again. We hope to have the shop open early-mid April (so don’t spend all your wages on bike bits just yet).

More details soon….

Space Available on First Aid Course

We have a few spaces left for the upcoming outdoor 1st aid course (22 & 23 April).  It will be taught by a mountain rescue member and a qualified MTB guide and will cover practical outdoor emergency care.  The course satisfies the requirements of a lot of outdoor qualifications like MBLA.  The spaces are available to members (£30) and non-members (£60) – so it even makes sense to join GMBC just to do the course!!

The spaces are available on a first-come-first-served basis.  Please pass this message on to any friends who would benefit.  To reserve your space please email infoATgmbcDOTorgDOTuk or sign into Webcollect and book your space.
