Super Selkirk Singletrack Saturday

In the club calendar for this coming Saturday:

Selkirk Singletrack Saturday

It’s a chance to explore some of the less-ridden (but still excellent) trails in the Tweed Valley.  I’m hoping the dry-ish weather in the east this week means the trails are in decent condition come Saturday.  Expect lots of climbs (3000ft+), a similar amount of descending, exposed moorlands, forest singletrack and a wee bit of fireroad and tarmac to join up the fun bits.  Take food for the day as a cafe stop isn’t guaranteed on this ride.  The meeting point is the main car park in Selkirk town centre, just off the town square.

Last time it looked a bit like this:

And according to the-now-Sheffield-based-ex-GMBC-rider, Grant H, it was one of his highlights riding here in Scotland when he said,

The Selkirk Singletrack ride this Summer, you all owe it to yourself to try this at least once.

You do owe it to yourself.  Get beyond the trail centres, we can ride them during winter!!

Galloway 7 Stanes Weekend Away (18-20 Nov)

UPDATE 02-Nov: all spaces now filled.  We can start a waiting list if anyone is interested.

This was talked about on some rides recently.  The plan is to have a weekend trip to Galloway so we can pick up the 7 Stanes trail centres down in the south west (e.g. Kirroughtree, Dalbeattie, Mabie and Ae or even Drumlanrig).  It’s based on booking out an entire hostel, in Newton Stewart – 26 people max and from conversations we’ve got 6-7 people up for it already.  We’d ride at Kirroughtree on Saturday and head east on the Sunday.

It’ll cost £15 per person per night (assuming we get more than 18 people signed up).  We’ll keep a waiting list in case it’s oversubscribed.  NB: There’s a few notes on the sheet regarding reservations & cancellations you should be aware of.

If you want to come then put you’re name down on this sheet, it’s first come, first served:

Sports Club Hall Use – New Guidance

Hi.  For anyone who’s ridden with the club you’ll know that a key part of the experience is the post-ride cuppa & chat in the hall.  We’re not the only people who use the hall and we’ve been asked to do our bit to keep it clean and tidy for other guests at the sports club (especially important as we go into autumn & winter).  I know we already do our bit to tidy up afterwards but there are some specific things we need to do or stop doing, namely… Continue reading

GMBC Social Events – Dates For Your Calendar

Hi.  There’s been some chat and it turns out that people seem to like socialising almost as much as riding bikes so here’s a couple of dates so you can plan ahead……

Friday 30th SeptemberPub Trip – location TBC.  Same as always – decide on which pub to meet in, then play a game of “guess the clubmate’s name because you don’t recognise them without a bike and crash helmet”.

Saturday 10th DecemberChristmas Night Out – Siempre Bicycle Cafe – menu and sign up form will come out in due course.

Glasgow Mountain Bike Orienteering 2016

Come join us on October 2nd for something a bit different – mountain bike orienteering! Part of a series of events in the 2016 SMBO calendar (http://www.smbo.org.uk/2016-events/), this is a really fun day out. We put out a bunch of checkpoints in the woods of Mugdock Country Park and the surrounding areas; you start at the sports club and go to find as many of them as you can in three hours. Simple? Well there’s no defined route – that’s up to you, so kind of!

We’ve run the same event a couple of times before and it’s always been a great success. The event is open to adults and children over the age of 15 (or over the age of 12 as part of a “generations” team). You can enter as a solo or a pair; we’ll give you a map showing the checkpoints and a dibber to check in at each checkpoint and undoubtedly some cake at the end… We have aimed to make the course fun for all, from first timers to experienced mountain bikers with lots of easily reachable checkpoints, along with some further afield for those looking for a challenge.

All entrants must be a full or day-rider member of the BMBO – day rider membership is free. All the details at: http://www.bmbo.org.uk/membership-information/

The event is now available to enter via the BMBO page here: http://www.smbo.org.uk/mugdock-2016/.

Prizes supplied by:

Prices to enter the event are as follows:

Solo: £15

Pairs: £25

Youth: £5

Generation Pair (adult/youth): £20

We want to see as many of you enjoying the event as possible but if you would prefer to help out we will need a couple of volunteers to help out on the day. Tasks include setting out & retrieving checkpoints & signage, directing people to Sign On and start points, a small amount of car park attendance (until event starts), course “marshalling” (marshalling is not official or static but it would be good to have a few folks to ride around the course area during the event to keep an eye out for any problems).

If you have any questions about the event or if you can volunteer then please post below, on the GMBC facebook page, contact info@gmbc.org.uk or speak to Graham, Angus, Will or Andrew S.
