Super Selkirk Singletrack Saturday

In the club calendar for this coming Saturday:

Selkirk Singletrack Saturday

It’s a chance to explore some of the less-ridden (but still excellent) trails in the Tweed Valley.  I’m hoping the dry-ish weather in the east this week means the trails are in decent condition come Saturday.  Expect lots of climbs (3000ft+), a similar amount of descending, exposed moorlands, forest singletrack and a wee bit of fireroad and tarmac to join up the fun bits.  Take food for the day as a cafe stop isn’t guaranteed on this ride.  The meeting point is the main car park in Selkirk town centre, just off the town square.

Last time it looked a bit like this:

And according to the-now-Sheffield-based-ex-GMBC-rider, Grant H, it was one of his highlights riding here in Scotland when he said,

The Selkirk Singletrack ride this Summer, you all owe it to yourself to try this at least once.

You do owe it to yourself.  Get beyond the trail centres, we can ride them during winter!!

Tweedlove: Shand Local Ride Outs (Selkirk)

Weather permitting I’ll be heading down to Selkirk to get a ride in with the locals as part of the Tweedlove festival, here’s the event blurb:

“Free events, just turn up and ride.

These rides kind of say what TweedLove is all about. Local riders share some of their favourite trails on these informal, friendly MTB rides. Just turn up and join us for a choice of rides around the valley. Routes vary according to weather and who turns up and usually last a couple of hours or so.

Free to join in – let’s give a big shout for our access legislation here in Scotland. All ride-outs are mixed groups except where noted. These are informal bike rides, and not officially guide-supported. Hosted by volunteer local riders. Treat it like a normal bike ride where you’re responsible for yourself and your bike – just meeting up with some new riding pals. You and your bike take part at your own risk. Anyone under 16 must be with a responsible adult.”

Weekend Rides: Glentress & Selkirk

If you want to join the weekend away trip for one of the days I thought I’d post up the plans.  NB: we also still have x1 space in the hostel if you want to stay over on the Saturday night.  If you’re interested in either the hostel space or joining the ride then post up on the website or email grahamDOTandertonATgmbcDOTorgDOTuk

Saturday:

Meeting in Glentress for a play about (assuming the enduro event leaves some trails free).  Some folks arriving about 10am, some a bit later.  If you’re coming let us/me know and we’ll arrange to meet you.

Sunday:

Sunday’s ride will start from Selkirk, aiming for 09:30 start and doing a route with multiple loops near the Selkirk area so there are bail out options if needed.  The full route I had in mind is about 65km and about 7000ft of climbing!!  Don’t worry, the bail outs are there for a reason 🙂  It’s a really varied mix of trails but I’d say it was for the intermediate rider who is comfortable on red trails with the occasional piece of black-grade trail.  There’s a cafe stop after either 25 or 45km but take food anyway.  Meet point TBC but probably the main public car park in Selkirk behind the town square.  Again, email if you’re interested.

Selkirk Locals Ride

Following the Selkirk MTB Marathon the day before, this event is a chilled out ride on some local trails with local riders.  If it’s anything like last year it’ll be a great ride with some excellent trails to see up close with local riders.

Selkirk Mountain Bike Marathon 2014

Event entry website

The most popular (and challenging) mountain bike marathon course in the UK?. Yep, we think so, and loads of riders seem to agree – this course was vote ‘best MTB Marathon’ several times in the last few years.

Brought to you by new management: renowned course designer Peter Laing (Selkirk MTB Marathon – known previously as ‘the Merida’, and latterly the ‘CRC’, and designer of several of the world-famous ‘7 Stanes’ trails) and Selkirk-based Durty Events, this is an epic ride through the best trails the Scottish Borders has to offer. We thought that the course, venue, riders, beers, giggles and grins were just too good for the Selkirk MTB Marathon not to continue and grow. Plus, we’ve got loads of new trails we want to show you. So here we go……

– Choice of 3 single-loop courses (approx. 25km, 50km and 75km) – something for families, novices, intermediates, enthusiasts and racing snakes alike.
– Superb mix of flowy natural and trail centre singletrack, ancient drove roads, mahoosive climbs and grin-inducing descents. Incredible views guaranteed!.
– Well stocked aid stations
– Safety cover
– Free car parking, camping and showers at Selkirk Rugby Club (Fri and Sat night)
– Free use of the Swimming Pool (Sat afternoon)
– Professionally organised, 100% signed course
– Electronic Chip Timing (Sport Ident system)
– Event T-Shirt
– Town Centre Start

The event is the host of the British MTB Marathon Championships. This will be run as a separate ‘wave’ start shortly before the ‘sportive’ events begin. It will be raced over the single lap 75km (approx.) course. You need to be a British Cycling race licence holder to take part in the Championships. The ‘sportive’ events 75km, 50km and 25km are open to everyone – no special memberships required.

Selkirk MTB Marathon Weekender – Roll Call

It’s getting closer to the time so I thought I’d post up to see who’s going and give you some details from the event organisers.  If you’ve not signed up but want more info then check out their webpage (http://www.selkirkmtbmarathon.com/).  You can sign up online until 7th May, there may be entries available on the day but they’ll be more expensive.  Here’s the timetable from the organisers: Continue reading

Reminder: Selkirk Ride This Weekend

Hi.  Just a quick reminder that the Selkirk ride is this Saturday (09:30 start).  IMHO, truly one of the best rides in the Borders!  It would be a great ride if you’re planning on entering the excellent Selkirk MTB Marathon event.  We can tailor the route to those present & the weather on the day as there are various options to shorten or extend the ride.  The riding will require a degree of skill and stamina [not sure why I’m going on it then 🙂 ].  I’d say if you’re comfortable riding red graded trails at a decent speed you should be OK but the route is longer than the red at GT.  The route has a mix of trail centre, open moorland track, fireroad and techy forest singletrack.  Take food as there’s no cafe en route unless we opt for a descent and a climb.  If you have any questions about the route then let me know.  Cheers, Graham
