BasqueMTB Ride Report: Autumn Sunshine

Earlier this year I finally got myself organised enough to sign up with an ex-GMBC’r, Doug MacDonald at BasqueMTB and opted to do his Back Country Pyrenees trip which included a week of skills coaching with Ed Oxley from Great Rock.

It’s one heck of a road trip and, as Doug said, it crams a month’s worth of riding into a 6 days.  My Garmin reckons it was 8,300ft of climbing and over 26,000ft of descent over only 96 miles.  The trails were a mix of dusty, dry desert, bedrock, alpine switchbacks and pine forests.  They were frequently steep and sometimes off camber and some had a fair degree of exposure with big drops off to the side if you screwed it up.

It was great to be coached and pushed beyond how I normally ride and the guides and other guests were a great crowd to hang out with.  If you get a chance then I’d recommend the Back Country Pyrenees trip.  It’s got me wondering what other trails Doug has to offer.  In the meantime, here’s a wee blast of Autumn sunshine, Basque-style.  Sadly, now a distant memory.

Intro Ride (Fireworks Night)

Tomorrow is the usual Intro night ride but with a twist!  It’s going to be a cold, clear night so wrap up warm, grab some munchies and maybe a hot drink (some mulled wine is being planned I believe) and we’ll head up to get a view of the fireworks across Glasgow.  We’ll need to leave the hall sharpish to make it up enough in time.  After we’ve seen our council tax go up in smoke we’ll carry on with a bit more riding before heading back for the usual cuppa.  It’ll be cold and we’ll be stopped for a while after riding uphill so take warm clothing. </dadMode>

Volunteer(s) Needed: Local Ride, Saturday 18th Oct

Hi.  We’ve been contacted by a chap from Canada (Colin Bixby) who’s going to be visiting Milngavie (where his mum lived) and he’s keen on getting out on a ride.  I’m looking for someone to host a longer local ride this coming Saturday and to show Colin some of the trails.  I’ve arranged, with Chris from Dales, to get him a bike.  I’m thinking maybe 11am until 3/4pm, maybe up to Lennox Forest or the Whangie, Carbeth, forest trails.

If you’re interested in hosting this ride for Colin (& the rest of the club) then let me know ASAP and I’ll put you in touch with Colin.

Abernethy SMBO Event: Saturday 11th Oct

Hi.  It’s the Abernethy round of the MTB orienteering series this coming Saturday.  If you’ve not done one of these before it’s a great 3 hours out on the bike and as competitive as you want to make it.  Basically you’re given a map and checkpoints and have 3 hours to get around as many of them as possible.  Map reading skills help, as does a degree of fitness – and if you have neither it doesn’t matter.

So, who’s up for it?  So far the following folks have either signed up or are interested in doing it:  Thomas Wylie, Ryszard, Mario, Katie, Angus, maybe Aileen and myself.  If you want to do it then decide quickly because the online entry closes on the 9th of October.  It may be possible to sign up on the day but to be sure get it booked ASAP online.

You can sign up at Entry Central and read more about it on the BMBO page.  If you’re going then either post up here or shout up on FB to arrange logistics.
