Navigation Course

Fed up getting lost at SMBO events? Want to be able to read a map or ride a mtb route without GPS?

Well now you can with the upcoming navigation course.

The course is open to all GMBC members and covers the following points:

Using A Map – understanding map symbols, gridlines/numbers, map scales and contours.

Using A Compass – taking bearings, magnetic North, walking a bearing and magnetic variation.

Getting Lost – Being prepared for the worst, enhancing your ability to navigate and knowing the techniques to navigate safely.

The course will run over 1 day and be split into two sections.  The first half will be theory in the classroom and the second will be roaming the hills putting what you have learned into practise.

The course will be held at Aberfoyle and start at approximately 9am on a Saturday or Sunday. Dates have yet to be confirmed and depend on interest. Provisional cost of the training is £35-£40, although this maybe subsidised by the club.

If you’re keen, please leave a comment and I’ll register your interest.

If I’ve missed anything or you have any questions that are not covered above, please get in touch and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Aviemore Weekend Away & Photos

Hi.  Well, what a weekend!  Thanks to all for making it another great trip.  Lots of great riding on all types of trail including flowy trail centres, epic Cairngorm loops and uber-techy natural trails.  The fun continued from the trails into the hostel with some great banter and the usual huge spread of food.  It was great to see so many of our newer riders getting a taste of what a GMBC trip away is all about.  If you missed it, or you were there and want to re-live the glory, then here’s a few photos:

Ordnance Survey photo competition

OS has announced a photography competition for their map covers. Follow the link to submit your own photos or vote for favourite ones:

https://os.uk/photofit/

Shall we try to get a few bikes onto the covers? If you upload anything, post a link in a comment so that everyone can give their vote. The deadline for the Outdoor Leisure series has gone already, but there are still plenty cover space for the remaining Explorer series (deadline April 19) and Landranger series (31 October).

Sunday 15 Local Ride

Hi, I was planning to head out for a wee spin around Mugdock this Sunday morning, at the usual time 9 am.

I posted late last year about a breakin where I had two bikes stolen – no sign of them however the insurance payed out so I have two new shiny bikes just waiting to be ridden.

I haven’t been out on either bike for ages and so a couple of hours, depending on the weather, and a cuppa is probably all I will manage.

I haven’t seen any mention of the local Sunday ride on the site for a while and I know some people are keen to head further afield at the weekends these days but if anyone is interested to join me it would be good to meet up.

All the best, Steve

Calling All Triathletes

Dear All,

I’d appreciate any help spreading the news about my little brother’s new company and his first innovative product.  I know this won’t immediately appeal to GMBCers, but I bet you have friends/family who are triathletes.

This Triathlonbox is now available on the market to ease the stress of transition.

The product has been designed by my younger brother and manufactured with all British components.  He’s done a huge amount of research and created a really robust, well thought out product.  I wish him all the success he is due.

If you would like to see more, then feel free to visit (it’s worth it just to see the cool little video of all the kit “swimming and running” into the box on his home page):

Sunday XC Ride?

Folks,

Weather is looking dry, bright and warmer east of the country on Sunday, so does anyone fancy an Ochils XC ride? I am thinking riding from BofA towards Glen Devon on a mix of road and pathways, then heading up and over the hills on a footpath to Auchterader, then heading back via mix of road and tracks pack.

I estimate this will take approx 3-4 hours, distance approx 40 miles.

Or, up for any other ideas, but best stay more east as much drier….

Sam
