Disco Brakes rotor

The venerable Shimano M525 front brake on the Rockhopper had been getting a bit sketchy, which I put down to the original rotor that was visibly concave after 8 years of continous use over two bikes, so time for a new rotor.  In my usual style of preferring industrial kit, I found that Disco Brakes were knocking out no-frills 160mm rotors for £8. Well, what’s in a rotor? You have to be able to produce a flat metal disc with holes drilled in the right places, if you can’t get that right, go and do something else. Continue reading

Glen Tilt, Sunday

I’ve roughly marked out the route, from Kenny Wilson’s book, here.  Weather looks to be excellent.  Meet at Blair Atholl, I’d suggest that we’re ready to ride by 1030.  So far looks like Elizabeth + friend, Grant, and me.  Any other takers?

Did anybody ride Wednesday?

Two new-to-GMBC riders went along for the 7:45pm ride yesterday.  They arrived at 7:20pm, but, when nobody else had turned up by 7:45pm, gave up and left.  Were there really no club members out for the main ride?  Conditions were a bit slippery but OK on Tuesday, which saw 17 out.  With the forecast and actual conditions fine for last night, it’s disappointing to think that nobody turned up.  Or was everybody down the SECC for the Iron Maiden gig? ;~)

Navigation skills course

The night provided an excellent grounding in basic essential navigation for those either previously untutored or, like me, whose previous training was buried in the mists of time and have become far too rusty thanks to a handy GPS unit.  Map setting, translating between your environment and the map, taking and following bearings, and how to get yourself unlost were all covered, with the aid of medium sized objects, a few blankets, some string, and a small monkey.  An excellent introduction to essential skills, and hopefully more members can take take advantage of future club-subsidised theory and practical sessions.

Tools found on WHW

No, not folk trying to ride the Westie in a day ;~) :

I found a wee pouch with tools today sitting at the bottom of Craigallian wood, where the steep downhills are, on the west highland way. If you can describe the pouch you can get your tools back!

Tuesday Ride

15 out (once I’d caught the group), lovely evening, trails still surprisingly dry, a lot of new(er) faces out.  Well worth making the effort to get out while the weather lasts.  Chris found a total of three latex gloves, make of that what you will.
