Campbeltown trip 16th/17th May

Me and Tom have been hatching a plan for a West-coast adventure next weekend.  It involves an evening ferry (18.40) from Ardrossan to Campbelltown on the Friday night (16th May) then an overnight stay in the backpacker place in Campbeltown.  With an early start on the Saturday, we’ll follow the kintyre way up to Claonaig then get the 16.20 ferry to Lochranza, 20mile cycle over a hill to Brodick, last ferry (19.20) back to Ardrossan for chips and medals.   I should probably point out that neither of us have done this trip before so have no idea what it will be like or if the timings are feasible or whether we’ll end up missing ferries, getting stranded etc. So we take no responsibility if it all goes pear-shaped!! The makings of a true adventure!

If anyone else wants to come, you are more than welcome. Let me know as soon as possible as I’ll be booking the backpackers tomorrow.  I haven’t got a precise distance for how far the kintyre way is between campbelltown and Claonaig. It’s 35miles on road so probably more like 45-50 on a mixture of trails, minor roads and fire roads as well as some open moorland. It wiggles across the peninsula and is supposed to have some amazing views.  A cross bike is probably the best option if possible. Anyone keen for a trip somewhere new?

Sunday 18th May – XC or Road?

Hi Folks,

Planning to head out for a ride on Sunday 18th May, but thought I’d see if either of these are appealing to folks before i stick on the lCallander.

Option 1- Mentieths- Classic GMBC ride starting from Aberfoyle that’s not been on the Calender for a while. Will be muddy but that’s half the fun! Could extend over to Loch Venacher and check out the newly opened track to Kilmahog. (its lovely)

Option 2- Loch Katrine Road Ride- starting from Aberfoyle in reverse. Could extend this to include the new section of footpath that follows the Old Military road to Inversnaid. I’ll be on my cross bike, so no need for a road bike!

Option 3- Ochils/Dumyat alternative – Head out of Bridge of Allan through Mine Woods as usual, then continue past Dumyat. This loop goes around the back of Dunyat mainly on tracks with some XC, then sweeps done into Menstrie.

As you can see, I am keen to get out, so if you are interested in any, state your preference!

Summer social ride 31st May

Saturday May 31st has been proposed for the summer social pub ride. Usual schedule of 10am depart from the clubhouse heading out the WHW to Carbeth, then Blanefield, lennoxtown, Kirkintilloch, Torrance and back to Milngavie around 7pm. The emphasis as always is on the social side and is a great way to meet members of the club and enjoy food and drink (alcoholic or otherwise) throughout the day. The ride is approx 26 miles off road in a loop making it easy to join or leave at whatever time suits. It’s been very popular in past years with numbers around 15-20 over the day and with the sunshine that we’ll have this year (always the optimist) I’m sure we’ll get a tan along the way. I’ll post up nearer the time but pencil the date in on your diary.

GMBC Promo Video – Volunteers Sought

Being part of the best mountain bike club in Glasgow has its perks!  We’ve been asked if we’d like to do a wee promo video about the club.  So I’m looking for volunteers to appear in front of camera to talk about what it’s like being part of the club and some of the things we get up to.  It’ll be quite informal and it will be filmed outdoors and include us riding bikes.  It will be used as part of showcasing a Commonwealth sport to a Glasgow (and possibly wider) audience.

The filming dates/times are still TBC but I’m suggesting a midweek evening to them.  It’ll be done at Cathkin Braes.  It would be great to get a cross-section of club members (long time members, new members, expert riders, novice riders, men and women).  I’m especially keen on getting new members/novice riders involved.

It’s a great opportunity to show how passionate you are about our sport and the club so if you’re interested then post up here or send me an email.

Introductory Rides 2014: Starting 30th April 7pm

Introductory rides are starting again.

GMBC curious? Just getting back into riding? Fancy a chilled out ride? Then introductory rides are for you!

Wednesdays 7pm at Bearsden and Milngavie Sports Club located here .  We’ll head out for between an 1hr 30min – 2hrs at the pace of the slowest rider for a social ride on good trails (think trail centre blue).  Tea and biscuits/beer afterwards.

All you need is a well maintained off road suitable bike, a spare tube, pump and multi-tool and some enthusiasm.  Remember: no-helmet, no ride!

If you have any questions email info@gmbc.org.uk, post below or on Facebook.  A current GMBCer will be on hand at each ride to bore you senseless with terrible patter  provide information/advice about the club and mountain biking…

See you on the trails.

Saturday 3rd May – Fairlie alps and social

Graham and myself have been talking for a while about getting a club ride at my local spot in the hills around Fairlie and Largs. As here is nothing in the calendar for the first weekend in May, and the trails have finally dried out, we’ve decided this would be a good time.

This is a good chance to get a wee bit of a sociable ride too, as cars aren’t really required from Glasgow. Plan would be something along the lines of train from Glasgow to Dalry, which gives a nice 6 mile warm up on quiet country lanes, and gives great access to the moors and trails within.

Spot of lunch and a beer in the Village inn, Fairlie (Schiehallion on draft, liver and bacon… Yum!) and back out, either finishing up in Largs, by way of the new purpose built trails at kelburn, or West Kilbride, both of which are on the train line back to Glasgow.

Sunday Ride

Anyone else who hasn’t made it up to braemar this weekend (*sobs*) up for a local ride? Its looking like a braw weekend, not going to give it a miss. Usual 9am start (or can switch to 10 if I’m outvoted)…

Tuesday Night Ride (15/4)

Hi.  Who’s out for Tuesday night’s ride this week?  Although the weather looks good I won’t be out (both bikes being fixed and too much to do before the Braemar trip).  I thought I’d post up to start the chat as we have a new rider keen on joining us (Anthony).  If someone has a spare light please could they bring it along on Tuesday?  Please post up either if you’ll be riding or if you have a spare light Anthony could use if it gets dark.
