Useful App

If you’re out on a ride and want to let someone know when you’ve reached a certain point without having to take your phone out and text then this app (Android only) might be useful.  For example, let someone know you’ve returned to the club hall or tell your spouse/partner/mum to put the kettle on when you’re nearly home from a ride.  I’ve been using it for the last few weeks, seems to work fine.

Path Maintenance – A Call For Volunteers

At the AGM (meeting minutes available here) we agreed to restart path maintenance with the Mugdock Country Park rangers.  We’ve done work with them in the past (you can read more in the Responsible Riding section).  The idea would be to have a few half day sessions at weekends as we head through Spring.

However, we need your help so we’re looking for volunteers to give up a small amount of time to help, in whatever way you can, to look after the park that we get so much enjoyment out of.  We’re needing help with the following:

  • Managing the maintenance work
    • needing 2-3 volunteers max.
    • Involves; taking a small group of workers to an area and making sure the work is done safely and as agreed, discussions with the rangers on which areas to work on, deciding priorities for work and suitable solutions.  You also have the chance to get your hands dirty.
    • these volunteers are invited to an initial meeting with the park rangers this coming Sunday (17th) 1:30pm at Mugdock Visitor Centre.
  • Labouring only
    • needing as many people as we can get.
    • Involves; the physical work, digging ditches, moving dirt, clearing drains, laying new paths etc.  Despite the work it’s great fun and a chance to get a warm fuzzy feeling.  You can take part in as little or as much work as you have the time/are fit for.

We can’t stress enough how much of a difference this makes to Mugdock Country Park and it’s great for the reputation of all bikers in the local area so please get involved.

Old Skool Pre-Christmas Ride Sunday

While the trails have taken a battering of late, the weather for the weekend looks… well, better than what we’ve been riding in for the last few weeks.  So, any takers for an old classic format local jaunt this Sunday?  Set out from the sports club at 1000 GMBCT, lunch at Mugdock, and either go home afterwards or ride some more (I’ll be in the latter camp if I don’t snap any more bike parts).  Ride goes at the pace of whoever is hanging off the back, so probably me.

Bothy weekend 6-7th February

allt-scheicheachan--Alan-Be

There was a suggestion at the Christmas bash, that some folks would like a bothy weekend, so I thought I would put something in the calender to aim for. My suggestion is Allt Scheicheachan (pron. Alt shee-cha-chan, with the ‘ch’ as in loch both times) just up from Bridge of Tilt/Blair Atholl. All landrover tracks: approx 10km, yes some climbing up to 500m with alternative exit strategies including Beinn Dearg, weather permitting! http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/map1_14pt.shtml.

My other suggestion is early February, so we avoid the midgies!

If you can wait until then try this:

Hi
A few of us are heading out tomorrow morning for a pre Xmas party spin…

The plan tomorrow is to ride through Dougalston , up a country road to Lennox forest, a few trails through there, down the other side, up to crow road car park, down a lovely wee single track to back of wheel craft, along old railway line to strathblane, up in to mugdock and back to clubhouse.
9am sharp departure to be back for 11.30.. Nice steady pace. 😉

Sunday 6 Nov mid day spin in Mugdock

Hello

I’m going to head up to Mugdock around mid day for a couple of hours picking my way around the sodden trails.  Weather looks bright (ish) so a quick opportunity.  If anyone is free and wants to join – great.

probably head for the visitor centre and a bowl of soup before heading out.

Open 5 Adventure Racing Series

These are great. 5 hours, lots of checkpoints, mtb, run, route/effort is your choice.

This is a series of 6….see link: http://www.openadventure.com/open5/. The next race is the day after the Christmas party and is in N.Wales – No thanks! However, 10th Jan is at Bowland Forest. This is a get way to explore different areas. Think SMBO but with 400+ people. Enter as a solo 0r pairs (male/female/mixed). Prizes on offer but you will have to get you map reading and route finding skills up to speed.

Depending on interest I might try a book a dorm room out at a local hostel for us all to stay. Post up if interested – I’ll add it as an event.
